The Island provides a great choice of beaches, golf courses, tourist attractions, museums, zoos, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, fishing, fossil hunting, walking and cycling. There is something for everyone and nothing is more than an half hour away. Explore the Wild West Wight with its surfing beaches, or visit Sandown and Ryde with their sandy beaches perfect for children. Walk over the Downs with wonderful views and wild ponies. If you don't feel like going out relax in the large garden with a BBQ or table tennis while the children play on the swings, seesaw and Wendy House or explore the meadow and have a bonfire, toast marshmallows or chestnuts and have a singsong. The grounds are a mini nature reserve so watch out for red squirrels, badgers, rabbits, woodpeckers, owls and wild flowers and butterflies.
The house is ideally suited for children with play equipment a large meadow with swings and grounds to explore. Pets are also welcome and the house is perfectly placed for dog walking. Indoors the house is comfortable and warm and has an interesting arrangement of original art works and furniture collected by the owner, artist, Libby Jones.
Every effort has been made to make this a welcoming family home which is also used by the owner and her children and grand-children.
Rosecliff Lodge is not specially adapted to accommodate wheelchairs but for those with mild mobility problems there are beds and a bathroom on the ground floor plus, of course, the kitchen/diner and the conservatory.
Outside, the property is surrounded by 7 acres of woodland. There is a grassy area with swings, a seesaw and a Wendy House immediately around the house. An umbrella, three tables and 6 chairs are also included. Stored in the Wendy House are 4 more chairs, a BBQ, children’s' garden furniture and 2 paddling pools/sandpits. There is a garage which is used for storage.
By the garage is a full sized table tennis table and a little way down the driveway you will find a meadow with more adventurous swings for older children. This is also a great place for children to put up tents and make dens. In the centre of the meadow is a place for bonfires. Of course all these activities must be supervised by an adult and people use this area at their own risk.
Because the house is in such a wild area we have not attempted to make a conventional garden but have encouraged wild life and plants, so look out for snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, primroses and other wild flowers. Red squirrels and badgers can be seen too.
Shanklin and Bonchurch beaches are20 mins walk away or 10mins by car. Shanklin has a sandy beach and many restaurants and attractions. Bonchurch is pebble and sand with interesting rock pools, has one restaurant and is wilder and less busy. Within twenty minutes drive are Ventnor and Sandown beaches and there are many more beaches within an hour's drive to choose from.
Both Cowes and Fishbourne are ten miles from the house. Yarmouth is 15 miles. The Lymington-Yarmouth and the Portsmouth-Fishbourne crossings take half an hour. The Southampton-Cowes crossing is an hour. The nearest airport is in Southampton. The Island has an airport for light aircraft only. From Portsmouth a foot passanger ferry to Ryde connects to a train to Shanklin and a bus to the footpath leading to the house. However, the house is situated in an isolated area and a car is recommended.
Both Ventnor and Shanklin are about 2 miles away. Ventnor has many antique, and second hand shops. Shanklin has general shopping. Newport the capital is ten miles away and has an interesting arts centre. Sandown (four miles) has a Zoo and a Dinosaur Museum. There are many places of interest on the Island: Carisbrooke Castle, Osborne House, Amazon World, Robin Hill amusement park, Appledurcombe House, The Needles, Blackgang Chine, Godshill Village and church, are a few recommended to visit.
There are Somerfield supermarkets in all the main towns and large supermarkets in Lake, Newport and Ryde. All the nearby towns - Ventnor, Shanklin and Sandown have banks and a good selection of Restaurants and shops. Just about every leisure activity and sport is catered for on the Island. Pick up a free tourist guide and magazine on the boat crossing to find the details.
