Set in the beautiful rolling hills of Powys, five-star-rated Pipistrelle is a very stylish and cozy little getaway for a couple (plus an infant and a dog) with wonderful views over the Brecon Beacons. Formerly a coach house, this superb self-catering holiday cottage is perfect for romantic short breaks, week-long holidays or honeymoons and minimoons. Very baby-friendly, it has all the baby equipment you will need, from high-chair and cot, to toys, stair-gate and change mat. One well-behaved dog is welcome, with bed, bowls and dog towels all provided.
Downstairs, the clean, contemporary living-area is open-plan, with accents of zingy colour in the chrome yellow of the iconic dining chairs, and the bright red cushions on the sofa and armchairs. The kitchen is extremely well-equipped for making cooking fun and easy: all modern appliances, including a blender and a fantastic Gaggia coffee machine. Original paintings by local artists and the owners beautiful black-and-white photographs of local scenes adorn the walls. Over-sized blocks of Lego create more splashes of colour, as well as something fun for a toddler (or an adult) to play with. Or enjoy the extensive entertainment technology in the shape of the portable TEAC iPod docking station, the large flat-screen LCD television with full Free-Sat, the CD-player and DAB radio, or the Blu-ray DVD player. French doors and large windows frame the beautiful view, which can be enjoyed from both floors of this comfortable cottage. Upstairs, the lovely bright bedroom has an inviting king-size bed with a vintage Welsh blanket, a reading chair to curl up into, and a fabulous bathroom. A big claw-footed roll-top bath, a dinner-plate shower rose, loo and wash hand basin are all contained in a stylish en-suite room, made bright by translucent glass bricks, an amusing yellow Lego soap-holder and bright red towels. Outside, sit and enjoy the view on the raised deck with its vista across the countryside, or open the gate to enjoy the eight acres of privately owned surrounding fields (filled with lambs in the spring months) and walk around the wild-life-rich landscape. Owls, buzzards and red kites all nest within walking distance of the cottage, and if you are lucky, you will catch hares boxing in the early morning mist. Cooking can be al fresco, with barbecue and fire pit provided. Summer evening entertainment is provided by the swifts and bats cavorting in the summer dusk. Later, it is the owls that dominate the night sound, with the local foxes coming out to play.
Things to do around Pipistrelle, one of the best-equipped cottages in Wales
Only a little further afield are the Brecon Beacons and the myriad outdoor activities that the National Park has to offer - horse riding, cycling, walking, wild swimming, canoeing and kayaking, fishing, bird-watching, canal boats, paragliding and much, much more. The market town of Builth Wells and the Royal Welsh Show ground is a fifteen minute drive away, with all the facilities you could wish for (including probably the best butcher in mid-Wales). The beautiful west coast, with its peaceful beaches, is an hours drive west, and Hay-on-Wye, with its famous second-hand bookshops is within half-an-hours drive. The Play Barn at nearby Brecon is a must for small children on rainy days. Cardiff is just over an hours drive south, with its beautiful Millennium Centre for great opera or concerts, good shopping, and the redeveloped Cardiff Bay area with all its restaurants and views over the water. The Llyn Brianne reservoir and the Elan Valley (so peaceful!) are less than thirty minutes drive away. For eating and drinking, the local pub, a mile away, is dog-friendly and its food is described as 'good honest food'. However, the Prince Llewellyn at Climery and The Red Lion on the way to Newbridge both do really great food and are OK with dogs.
