* The spectacular fishing village of Parlatuvier is just a 40 km drive from Crown Point Airport, up along the picturesque North Coast road. This working village has a perfect crescent shaped beach curving away towards pretty pastel beach houses, a small elementary school, a few tiny shops, a rum parlour and breathtaking views. Set against a backdrop of stunning tropical rain forest Parlatuvier is Caribbean village life at its simplest. On either side of Parlatuvier are the villages of Castara, Englishman’s Bay and Bloody Bay, each with their own beautiful beaches and a variety of restaurants and small shops. Fresh fish can be bought most days from the jetty in Parlatuvier and at the fishermen’s cooperative in Castara. Bird watching, rain forest walks, boat trips, fishing trips, snorkeling and scuba diving are just a few of activities that can be found within the village or just a short drive away. In Parlatuvier, a unique and memorable tropical island experience is awaiting you.
The Tamarind House is Amazing
My wife and I stayed at the Tamarind House in March '08 and it was amazing! The location of the house is the best. It was nice and quiet with close access to little stores and restaurants in the bay. We felt safe and comfortable during our stay. The whole place is wisely designed and feels cozy. The property was very clean, and the landscaping is exactly what you see in the pictures, beautiful! Views from this hilltop villa are great, because you’re basically staying at one of the highest points in Partlatuvier Bay. Watching the sunset every evening from the second story wooden deck is a must!
The small downstairs apartment is well equipped with everything you need (although the fridge could be bigger), and the air conditioner (with remote) in the bedroom works extremely well! We found ourselves using the grill and pool area everyday, it was nice to be able to cook outside and soak-in the scenery. Also there’s a wonderful 5-10min hike to a beautiful waterfall starting from just across the edge of the driveway of the Tamarind House. The owner’s of the Tamarind House are very friendly and respond quickly to inquiries. The customer service provided by the property managers was excellent! They just couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful whenever we needed them. I would definitely recommend this house to anyone I know.
The best party in the area is on Wednesday night in the nearby town of Castara (15-20 min drive from Tamarind House) at the Boat House Restaurant for the best Steel Drum players you’ve ever heard and the tastiest all-you-can-drink Rum Punch in the Caribbean. And the food is really good too. The best snorkeling is even closer at Englishman’s Bay, go all the way out to the tips of the bay on both sides. The hot roti & chicken curry at Eula’s Restaurant on Englishman’s Bay is yummy! (watch out for the hungry kitty cat) Drive to Blue Waters Inn, Speyside and check out the Frank’s Glass Bottom Boat tour to Little Tobago and hike to through the bird sanctuary (snorkeling included) for only $17 US. Enjoy your stay at Tamarind House! I know we did!
Five Star Luxury in Paradise
For a week in June 2008, my boyfriend and I stayed in Tamarind House, a ‘5 Star luxury paradise villa' in the remote fishing village of Parlatuvier. The villa had much more to offer than just the day to day household necessities – there were impressive views of not only the bay, but also the surrounding rainforest in which we found ourselves becoming deeply absorbed. Although we stayed in the well equipped downstairs apartment, we still had the luxury of eating breakfast on the veranda which over-looked the bay with a million dollar view that could never tire us.
One of our favourite features of the house was the small, but more than sufficient, outdoor swimming pool, a fantastic place to cool down and watch the sun set after a long day exploring the island. The pool was also the perfect place to spend a romantic evening, sitting under the starry Caribbean night sky accompanied by the serenading sounds of the tropical night-time nature.
The best thing about the apartment was the huge, open spaced shower area decorated with mosaic tiles in different hues of blue. The air-conditioned bedroom with mosquito netting over the bed made for a great night's sleep.
Just a short walk from the end of the drive, is a great little parlour selling delicious Roti, a local lunchtime snack. If what you are wanting is a quick, filling, tasty yet affordable lunch which is also a Caribbean 'delicacy' - then a trip to the Roti hut is a must .
When it came to exploring the island, we did it in true Che Guevara style - via a motorcycle. We rented out a 125cc motorcycle and had a blast! It was a great way of travelling and gave us a real, close-up sense of Tobago. We found ourselves constantly pulling up at the side of the road to embrace those exquisite views and take photos. Probably not such a good idea in rainy season though!
Neighbouring Englishman's Bay really is a spectacular place to soak up the sun and splash around in the sea. If you are really lucky and get there at the right time, you may have the whole beach to yourselves. I completely understand how Englishman’s Bay was once voted one of the top ten beaches in the world.
Overall, we had a wonderful trip to Tobago and could think of no better place to have stayed than Tamarind House. The fact that the owners are willing to share it with others is something that should definitely be taken advantage of - it has to be seen to be believed.
Honeymoon Spent in Paradise!
We stayed at Tamarind House for a week in Sept 09 for our honeymoon. Tobago has to one of the few gems left in the world that hasn't been taken over by the tourist hotel block/water park money machines. Tamarind House offers an excellent level of accomodation with absolutely stunning views of Parlatuvier Bay to the front and exotic rain forest scenery to the side and rear. The refreshing pool is a must on the hot days! There is an abundance of wildlife literally on the doorstep be it the beautiful parrots, humming birds or the gecko/lizards. For our honeymoon retreat we were after something special, away from the buzz and commotion that we have in every day life - we found the required peace and tranquility at Tamarind House & Tobago. The service we recieved from the owners was nothing short of exceptional, by far better than any 5 star treatment we have recieved before - taxi pick up at airport, food shopping prior to arrival, welcome meal, island info etc. as well as a great help and service offered pre, during & post booking. There are a few locals who are on hand at or near Tamarind House be it the house keeper, local tour guide, ice cream man etc. all on hand to offer advice on how to find what you're looking for or to advise the must see or do attractions - or to just leave you in peace!
For Tobago itself; there is the oppurtunity to dive and snorkel at the many deserted beaches, hike/trail, boat trips etc. at various points all over the island and with the island only being 26 miles by 6 miles wide, everything was easily reachable with a hire car. There are various restaurants in Paralatuvier and nearby towns or elsewhere on the island that offer lovely, varied local cuisine and experience (drum night on a Wednesday in Castara Bay was especially entertaining, as was the tranquility offered by a beatiful beach front view from the Blue Waters Inn near Speyside).
If you are after an escape and something outwith the normal tourist chain experience, Tamarind House and the island of Tobago has to be on your list.
A Taste of Paradise
Our family group of three were met at the airport by an amazing taxi driver called Anthony, who sang some excellent Calypso music to us during the journey to the appartment. What a fantastic welcome to this beautiful island!
The appartment had everything we needed for a perfect holiday. On one side of the appartment there is a lovely panoramic view of Parlatuvier beach, while on the other there are dramatic rainforest slopes with lots of Amazon parrots, which kept us entertained with their antics!
The birdlife in Tobago is fantastic; our particular favourites were the hummingbirds which visited the flowers by the door to the appartment and the cheeky bananaquits!
We would definitely recommend going on a guided tour of the rainforest, particularly along the Gilpin Trail. We found the details at Tamarind House for Fitzroy who was an outstanding guide and pointed out all kinds of wildlife we would definitely have missed without his expertise!
Our favourite local beaches were Bloody Bay (which we walked to) and Englishman's Bay (which we took the bus to). Englishman's Bay was voted one of the top ten beaches in the world! The snorkelling was good there, although it is best not go out after the fishermen have been trawling!
Everybody we met was very friendly and helpful and we were very glad that we stayed in Parlatuvier as we found it very natural and unspoilt.
The appartment has a refreshing pool with a fantastic view of the rainforest.
Overall, we think Tamarind House is definitely somewhere to get relax, unwind and get away from it all.
We recieved excellent customer service before, during and after our stay and were greeted warmly on arrival at both the airport and the appartment. Thanks for sharing your beautiful holiday home with us! We would love to return one day!
