Sunny Beach is Bulgaria’s largest resort, situated 35 kilometres north of Bourgas and south of Varna, occupying a pretty stretch of coast just south of Cape Emine and north of Nessebar. The wide, six kilometre long beach is protected by dunes and touted as the best on the coast with a comfortable 24 degree Celsius water temperature. Set back from the beach are numerous small shaded parks and gardens, just right to laze in during the plentiful sunny days and watch the world drift by.
Sunny Beach lives up to it’s motto of ‘Where Families Come First’. Children and toddlers are kept occupied with well-equipped playgrounds and organised festivals. Adult sports include windsurfing, sailing, parasailing, scooter-driven parachuting, pedal-boating, waterskiing, horseback riding, archery, mini golf, roller and in-line skating, bowling, tennis, bicycling, volleyball and wall climbing. Nightlife is as equally varied and includes casinos, discos and nightclubs with live cabaret acts and colourful floor shows. Some 130 restaurants and taverns are accustomed to catering for foreign tastes so there’s something for everyone. Sunny Beach is the locale for the Bulgarian popular song festival held in early June featuring contemporary, Western-influenced pop and love ballads. For the more culturally minded visitor the Bourgas opera and philharmonic company put on performances in the outdoor theatre.
Four kilometres south of Sunny Beach lies Nessebar; it boasts both new and old areas which nestle together in peaceful co-existence, surrounded by balmy seas and wide sandy beaches spreading to the north and south of town, bordered from the mainland by natural sandy dunes. It is the old town for which Nessebar is famous, situated on the Nessebar peninsular and separated from the mainland by a narrow strip of land. Often referred to as the ‘Old City’ it is one of the most ancient towns in Europe, known for its antique monuments and its magnificent architecture, dating back to the Middle Ages and the Bulgarian Revival period. Here everything speaks of romanticism and history; from the antique city gates and Byzantine city walls to the bishop’s residence built in the early 6th century. Two-storied houses made out of wood and stone grace the narrow cobbled streets and offer a complete contrast to the neighbouring modern seaside resort of Sunny Beach.
Sunny Beach is the main seaside resort in the immediate area, boasting wide soft, sandy beaches and many local catering outlets and shops for visitors. By contrast it is adjacent to the historic town of Nessebar which dates back to the 6th century. (see information re. Bulgaria). It is approximately ¾ hour drive to Varna, the main city on the Black Sea Coast, which is also the main airport for the area. There is another airport at Bourgas, which is approximately 20 minutes away. Transport services are available from both airports.
