With skiing between 1700m and 2200m it boasts some of Austria’s most snow sure skiing yet also benefits from over 200 days sunshine a year, making it a truly dual season resort.
Right on your doorstep is the ski region of Kreischberg, which is reachable in minutes by car or the little local train which is a short walk away at the bottom of the lane (The ski pass allows for free travel on the train and extra trains are laid on during peak times). Kreischberg itself has over 30km of skiing including 11 lifts, 3 chairlifts, 6 drag lifts, 2 cable cars, snow park, half pipe, ski school for children from 4 years old, cross country ski tracks, toboggan run, snow shoe hikes; snow tube, curling, and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
Kreischberg is snow-sure as it also has 100% snow cannons. There are also 5 restaurants, a disco and 2 bars.
Additionally, the Turracher Höhe ski region is only 20 mins away, presents 40km of further skiing, with a spectacular frozen lake in the centre which you can ski over. Furthermore, it offers night skiing, sleigh riding, and tobogganing. Turracher Höhe has 8 restaurants, 2 discos and 5 bars.
A little further away (45km) is the Obertauern ski region with over 120km of pistes. It is one of the most snow sure resorts in Austria, and offers good skiing for experts, intermediates and beginners. Keen skiers can buy the Salzburger ski pass which covers 22 ski resorts in the region.
There are several supermarkets in Murau on the main road and one on the main road at St Georgen where the petrol station is. Also there are nice cake shops and coffee shops in Murau town center. The Gasthof Schafferwirt is the restaurant at the end of the road. This is just 3 minutes walk and serves excellant food. Other good restaurants are Gasthof Hotel Restaurant Lercher in Murau (located on the left as you leave the main road and drive towards the town center). Also the Biertwirtshaus Moser near the ski slopes which does an excellent mixed grill and has fantastic local beers is well worth a visit.

Travel via Munich to Salzburg. Take the A10 motorway and pass through the Tauern tunnel to St. Michael in Lungau. On the exit to the motorway a tollgate is in operation. Turn towards Mauterndorf and then follow the signs for Tamsweg, follow the B97 signposted to Murau. This road passes through Stadl an der Mur. Just keep going towards Murau and exactly 3km from Murau (West of Murau) there is the Restaurant 'Schafferwirt' http://www.schafferwirt.at/ on the right side of the road, opposite the construction of a large wooden Spider. Turn right at the small road in front of the restaurant and cross the bridge over the River Mur then turn left and cross the small railway track and continue up the incline. The Chalet is located just ahead in a small settlement a few hundred meters further on the left.
From Vienna
Take the A2 (motorway), continue along the A2 through Semmering tunnel, going past Bruck/Mur and Leoben, until you reach the motorway junction St. Michael/Leoben. Continue in the direction of Klagenfurt, passing Knittelfeld and Judenburg, until the end of the motorway. Join the B97 to Murau. After passing through Murau, 3km from the town limit (West of Murau) there is the Restaurant 'Schafferwirt' http://www.schafferwirt.at/ on the left side of the road, opposite is the construction of a large wooden Spider. Turn left after the restaurant and cross the bridge over the River Mur then turn left and cross the small railway track and continue up the incline. The Chalet is located just ahead in a small settlement a few hundred meters further on the left.
From the South
