La Golondrina is a newly restored house in the centre of a small, unspoiled village, within the highly protected Sierra Nevada National Park. This area is one of the richest in Europe for wildlife and biodiversity, and fantastic for walking or just taking it easy and enjoying the peace and quiet.
Our house is named La Golondrina - the swallow - after a bird who nested and successfully raised a brood of five babies in a back room of our house while the builders were at work. The village and the area in general are like that - you're very close to nature and you can enjoy bird-watching and star-gazing without even leaving the roof terrace.
Our street is too narrow for most vehicles, but horses, mules and goats frequently pass by the house on the way to pasture above the village. Outside the house is very traditional in style, but inside there's a very modern level of comfort. Rooms are bright and generously proportioned - especially compared to typical holiday villas and apartments - and the house is very well equipped and furnished. On the first floor are three big bedrooms and two bathrooms, and on the top floor a spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living area opens through French doors to the lovely terrace with spectacular views. There's also a little walled garden.
The village is very quiet most of the time, with fewer than 200 permanent residents, although it gets lively during fiestas, and on some weekends when people come up from Granada. There are three bars which still serve delicious free tapas when you buy a beer or a glass of wine.
Juviles has a lovely new outdoor swimming pool (Summer months only), a community fitness centre and free broadband access in the little library. There's a small food shop and a pharmacy, and fresh bread, fish, fruit and veg and even wine are sold from vehicles in the main street on various days of the week. Bigger villages and market towns (within twenty minutes drive or so) have many more shops, restaurants and banks.
The name Alpujarra refers to the Southern foothills of the Sierra Nevada, stretching between the provinces of Granada and Almeria and down from the mountains to the sea. Thirty or so villages are dotted through the hills, and most, like Juviles, are pretty collections of whitewashed, flat-rooved traditional houses. Amongst the communities, you'll find some surprisingly sophisticated restaurants, and businesses offering everything from yoga classes to guided walking. Granada and the Alhambra is an easy day trip, and the beaches of the Costa Tropical are under an hour's drive.
Our house - and the area in general - are perfect if you like nature, walking, mountain-biking, horse-riding and other outdoor pursuits (we can provide contacts). It's also a fascinating area if you're interested in the history of the Moors in Spain, and the food is phenomenally good (as long as you like authentic, rustic fare). The proximity of Granada and the rest of Andalucia makes it easy to combine with city breaks or a stay at the beach.

recommended Juviles is about 1,200m above sea level, in the strictly protected Sierra Nevada National Park. People here still keep mules to help on their smallholdings of olive, almond and chestnut trees. The region is one of the very best in Europe for walking, and one of the most important in terms of diversity of plant and animal species. It's also a great place for horse-riding and mountain-biking, both of which can be arranged locally, and close to the ski-slopes for the winter season. There are excellent beaches about forty minutes away, while the sophisticated city of Granada - with the Alhambra, of course - is about an hour and 15 minutes away by car. Local culinary delicacies include famous air-cured ham, ewe's cheese and wild mushrooms. The friendly bars preserve the tradition of offering free tapas when you buy a beer or a glass of wine. The village has a beautiful pool (open during the summer), a public gym, and free wireless internet from the town hall square. |

Lovely house, wonderful location
This property provides excellent value for money. The view from the roof terrace was every bit as good as described. It was spotlessly clean and well cared for, with nice, new facilities. There was hot water whenever needed and very efficient showers. We were very well supported before our visit - the owner providing careful instructions for picking up keys and directions from the airport. The house has a good selec tion of local guides and maps and the housebook of guidance and instructions is excellent. Telephone numbers for help were available though we did not need them. This would be a very good base for a holiday at any time of year.
Best holiday we've had in Spain
Property was fitted out to a very high standard and very well equipped with a patio giving splendid views. A very quiet village with flocks of sheep and goats herded down the main street. Some of the best walking in Las Alpujarras with an excellent supply of walking guides in English and Spanish and plenty of books for a rainy, or lazy, day. Good restaurants both in Berchules and Trevelez about 20 mins away. Best holiday we have had in Spain! Owner very helpful prior ro arrival and good English-speaking assistance available when needed in Juviles.
La Golondrina, Juviles, La Alpujarra, Spain
As properties go, La Golondrina ticks a lot of boxes including modern home comforts, typical Alpujarran charm and to-die-for views of the surrounding countryside. The village, despite being tiny, also has a lot going for itself including some great bars serving tasty tapas and a fantastic communal pool that wouldn't look out of place in a top Spanish resort. Some of our holiday highlights included stargazing from La Golondrina's patio and walking through thyme-filled meadows - a total feast for the senses. We just can't wait to go back.
Perfectly formed
I love it. La Golondrina rocks. It's got views to inspire you to paint and all the amenities you'll ever need for a lovely stay. Cooking the local produce bought at the market in Cadiar was a pleasure as you look out over the valley through the double doors onto the balcony. There's a mineral water swimming pool in the village too and some lovely quaint little tapas bars where you can while away your days and evening nattering to the locals. I think I'll have to visit in all the seasons just to see the changing view. Describe it in one word- perfect.
Cheers Si

We think the house is suitable for families with older children, but you must be aware that there is a roof terrace which could present a danger for toddlers. The house is on three floors and has lots of stairs. Elderly or infirm people may find the walk up to the house challenging.
