The Scottish Highlands include the rugged and mountainous regions of Scotland north and west of the Highland Boundary Fault. The Highlands are popularly described as one of the most scenic regions of Europe. The area is generally sparsely populated, with many mountain ranges dominating the region.
Gairloch (Geàrrloch in Gaelic) is a small village on the shores of Loch Gairloch on the Northwest coast of Scotland.
Fishermen will be pleased to hear that there is a choice of salmon, sea trout, brown trout, pike, and sea fishing. You can also take falconry courses, or go and visit the deer museum after some deerstalking! For the adventurous, there are plenty of opportunities for climbing, kayaking, pony trekking, whale-watching trips or even boat trips to view Viking graves on Loch Maree or the puffin colony on the Shiant Islands. Alternatively visit the famous Inverewe gardens.
The bungalow is situated in the quiet community of Melvaig, (near Gairloch), having its own bar and restaurant. The coastline around Melvaig and to the Lighthouse (approx. 4 miles) is rugged; a haven for nesting birds, seals, whales and otters. This wide open expanse offers magnificent sunsets.

Wester Ross offers so much to see and do.Amazing choice of marine life boat trips, including a glass-bottomed boat, to see whales, dolphins, basking sharks and porpoise. Also Boat trips to the puffin colonies on the Shiant Islands. Nearby Loch Maree is home to several small islands and trips on the loch are available to visit the Viking graves on Isle Maree. Fishing enthusiasts have ample opportunities to fish for sea trout, brown trout and salmon. The magnificent Beinn Eighe Nature Reserve, with its spectacular mountain scenery,hill lochs and mountain trails, is a short drive from the cottage. In addition, there are many beautiful sandy beaches and coastal walks with amazing views over the sea and Hebridean Islands, and sightings of otters. There is a jetty at Melvaig which is ideal for launching small boats, and kayaking is a favourite pursuit along this coastline. Melvaig also offers a trditional pub in the form of the Melvaig Inn. Open 6 days in season, lunchtime and evening, the menu is wide and varies with seafood being a particular speciality. The area is a bird-watchers paradise for seabirds, garden birds and raptors, including sea eagles and golden eagles. The world famous Inverewe Gardens, with a huge variety of trees, flowers and shrubs from all over the world is well worth a visit, as are the Gairloch Heritage Museum, Scottish Natural Heritage Vistor Centre near Kinlochewe, and also the Deer Museum on the road to Torridon. Ferry service available from Ullapool to the Isle of Lewis.
