Rachan is situated on the Northern edge of the sparsely populated and hugely scenic Upper Tweed Valley and just a mile or so south of the village of Broughton in the Scottish Borders. The house itself is within a small hamlet consisting of Rachan Home Farm and handful of other homes scattered within the surrounding woodland. In every direction you will find grass, heather or snow covered peaks but specifically overlooking Rachan is Dreva Craig, where the remains of an old hill fort still stand and Trahenna Hill at 546 meters. A short stroll away is the River Tweed itself with pretty walks along its banks with fishing permits available. The quaint village of Broughton, offering a village store, tearoom/bistro/pub, petrol station/garage/Post Office, church, bowling green, tennis courts and village hall is just a 5 minute drive away or if you would prefer, a scenic 30 minute walk along a disused railway line. The characterful market towns of Peebles and Biggar offer numerous cafes, restaurants, bars, a wide variety of specialty shops, supermarkets, sports facilities and parks. A little further afield (30 mins) but a beautiful drive away is the historic town of Moffat. We can highly recommend Scotland’s only destination Spa, the beautiful Stobo Castle and Japanese Garden set in stunning surroundings, is only a 10 minute drive away and offer day taster deals at all times of the year. We recommend that you book well in advance. The River Tweed which is again on our doorstep is synonymous for salmon fishing and permits are available if arranged in advance. The Scottish Borders is a well known destination for mountain bike enthusiast. Award winning biking centres can be found just a half hour drive away at Glentress and Innerleithen and caters to all levels and all ages. Remember to set the sauna for a relaxing muscle treatment on your return! The 89 mile Tweed Valley Cycle Way starts at Biggar and ends on the coast in Berwick-upon-Tweed. For those with less stamina, there are an abundance of single track roads to explore taking you into the lesser known areas of the Scottish Borders. Kailzie Equestrian Centre is located on the outskirts of Peebles, an area of outstanding scenic beauty and offer Hacking/Tuition by the hour or by the day. There are a number of golf courses available on the outskirts of Edinburgh but our closest is at MacDonalds Country Club just 10 minutes east of Peebles. Dawyck Botanic Gardens is a satellite of Edinburgh’s highly regarded Botanic Gardens and is maintained beautifully. It is located 10 minutes away in the direction of Drumelzier (Peebles). The beautiful Kailzie Gardens offers something for almost everyone with beautiful gardens, licensed restaurant, café, fly fishing, children’s play area and even an Osprey Watch project. Our village has a small cask ale brewery, Broughton Brewery, which produces many popular beers, including “Merlin”, “Black Douglas”, “Scottish Oatmeal Stout” and “Greenmantle”. Originally a hunting lodge for Kings and Queens, Traquair House is the oldest inhabited castle in Scotland dating back 1107. You can check out their website for what fairs are currently arranged. We recommend Mudhoney softplay/café in Peebles, the MacDonalds Country Club for use of their swimming pools, the maze at Traquair House, Glenholm Wildlife Centre for wildlife and Dalscone Country Park (a little further afield in Dumfries) is the perfect destination for kiddy farm fun. You will find play parks in most villages including a small one in Broughton.
