not necessary Mürren (1650 m) - a marvellous mountain village, car free, rich in tradition. Perched on a high, sunny terrace facing the famous Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the village is the highest altitude ski resort in the Bernese Oberland. It nestles at the foot of the Schilthorn with its revolving Piz Gloria Restaurant, made world-famous by a James Bond film. In winter In summer, Mürren is the perfect place from which to start a host of hikes, from simple to strenuous. You can reach Mürren from Lauterbrunnen by mountain railway (BLM) or from Stechelberg by aerial cableway (LSMS). From Murren you can take the mountain cog railway to Wengen, Jungfraujoch (Top of Europe) and Grindlewald. |

Spot on, it is spacious!
Date of Stay: January 2010
After 4 skiing holidays, this was definately the best accommodation we've had. Listing description was spot on, chalet was actually more stunning than on pictures. Good customer service from owner, property was clean, well-maintained and very well equipped, especially the stunning kitchen which only lacks a microwave. We loved the extra large wine glasses and also the coffee machine! More than enough linen & towels. You don't need to take anything. Also enjoyed the DVD player and 2 TVs as well as all the games. The apartment is very spacious and the location great, just above the bank and supermarket, opposite the ski hire shop and very close to restaurants as well as Allmendhubel lift station and ski school. Will definately recommend to friends and relatives. Kids loved the bob run. We had supper at Steiger Stubli and Hotel Jungfrau and would recommend them both. Negatives about Murren are that there is little or no night life and few shops. However as a family on a skiing holiday this was not an issue at all.
Murren Penthouse
Date of Stay: January 2009
An excellent appartment in a typical Swiss village!!
The standard of the facilities provided exceeded all our expectations. There was even a "docking station" for our son's Ipod!!
Information supplied by the owner was accurate and it allowed us to start our holiday the minute we arrived. He always replied promtly to all my questions prior to departure.Three large double room with two bathrooms make it ideal for families and groups of up to six people. The appartment can take up to eight people with the additional two sleeping on the large mezzanine floor.
Getting to Murren can be a problem. We booked a flight and coach transfer with Inghams at a cost of about £240. The coach drops off at Lauterbrunnen at the base of the mountain and the cable car/train journey up to Murren is a further 20 CHF return. The flight is from Gatwick is convenient at 12.15hrs with about a 45 minute transfer from Berne airport to Murren.
The alternative is a flight to Geneva or Zurich with a train journey with several changes.Transfer times can be in excess of three hours this way.
The appartment is located very close to both the ski hire shop (Edy's), the cable railway up to the slopes and several excellent restaurants. Ski in and ski out is a real bonus. The local produce shops (meat, cheese, bread etc) are supplemented by a very well stocked Coop which is next door. The locals are very friendly and helpfull!!
The setting of Murren, looking over to the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau is stunning. The views for the appartment are equally stunning!! A visit to the "James Bond" rotating restaurant (Piz Gloria) is a definate must!! An "all you can eat" breakfast, with a glass of champagne, is served until approx 11.00hrs every day. Its not cheap at 33CHF/person but the ambiance and the views make it worthwhile.
The skiing area serves all levels. The pistes can be narrow in places but there are no crowds so no real problems. In a weeks skiing, we never queued at a chair once!!
Only down side is that Switzerland is currently expensive for Brits but we would definately return ourselves and would recommend it to all of our skiing friends!
Prefect Murren Penthouse!
Date of Stay: August 2008
This is a terrific apartment. It is spacious, well-appointed, perfectly clean, modern, with a fully-equipped and large eat-in kitchen, and with stunning views of the alps from the large main-floor windows. The wireless internet access kept our family of six connected to the "outside" world during our 11 delightful days there. The in-unit clothes washer and dryer were a great convenience. The Coop grocery store on the ground floor is literally just steps away (except on Sundays when it's closed, so stock up on Saturday!). Top Apartments, the local management company, was super-responsive when we had questions. We simply can't say enough about this wonderful apartment. It far exceeded our expectations and helped make this our best Swiss vacation ever. We hope to rent there again as soon as we can get back to Murren. I can wholeheartedly recommend Chalet Steinbock without a moment's hesitation. You won't be disappointed.
Fantastic apartment in an amazing mountain village
I want to go back! We just returned from 17 days traveling around and hiking in Switzerland...and Murren and this apartment were an amazing 7 days of that trip. Perfect location. We had 3 couples and we had plenty of room. I cannot think of one thing negative, it was just a perfect place to say in a postcard village. If you want to spend a week feeling like you live in one of the most beautiful villages on earth, then this would be a great rental property for you too!
