Description
Annapurna is a beautifully situated house in the South Hams of Devon, and the apartment is all on the ground floor. Annapurna was a farmer's cottage, believed to have been built, or converted to a house, in the 1700s. It is surrounded by fields, in a sunny spot looking down a little valley to Modbury. Large gardens surround the house and offer various spots to sit in the sun, take in the view or scan the pond nearby for baby moorhens. It feels like a house that has always been 'home', as it welcomes you as you come in. The 'young' wing was added in 1970, and the flat is mainly in this part but with a bedroom in what was an old barn, complete with lovely old curved walls, two feet thick.
There are steps down to the property and one small step inside (from hall to bedroom, in the old part of house).
Guests have a small private patio immediately outside the rear of the apartment, which is sunny and sheltered until midday. From here there are steps up to the main garden, with further seats for soaking up the sun. Small shed for storing logs and coal in winter, which may be used for bicycles at owners' risk. A paddling pool may be borrowed and there is an outside tap for filling it (plus loan of a foot pump!).
Beautiful beaches within easy reach, some lesser known except to locals. Bigbury is about 15 minutes by car, Kingsbridge approx 15 minutes by car, Salcombe 20 minutes, Dartmouth around half an hour. Access to the A38 and so to Dartmoor is approx 10 minutes. A38 also gives good access to Plymouth, Exeter, Buckfastleigh. Eden project around one and a half hours.
Nearest railway stations are Totnes, Plymouth and Ivybridge, but a car is essential for traveling around the area.
Modbury, one mile away, is a delightful little town with Georgian fronted buildings concealing homes which are much older.
The town has a long and interesting history as far back as the Domesday Book. It is a friendly town with many activities through the year and became famous for banning plastic bags.
