wonderful stay
First time in Marrakech - we were keen to experience the traditional city and we were not disappointed. This is a lovely riad, carefully restored, in the old part of the city. A calm peaceful oasis with an opportunity to be in the heart of the old medina. A step outside and you are straight into the hustle and bustle of local life and the souks. Jamil and his wife Amina who manage the property are so welcoming and look after you so well - with optional meals on a 'pay as you go' basis - and Amina is a wonderful cook! A great intro to this part of the world and one which we would recommend - and have already done so!
Comfort and Charm
I can only offer positive comments on my stay at Riad Maroc! We were met at the airport by Jalil and had our first sumptuous meal of chicken tajine in the evening prepared by Jalil's wife Amina. Their warmth and help continued throughout our stay and made it a very carefree and relaxing holiday. The house is full of Moroccan charm and comfort with Michele, the house's owner, on hand to point out a newly opened gallery and other places of interest to visit. The fact that it was my fifth visit to Riad Maroc must speak volumes!
Wonderful, tranquil riad + great hospitality
We had a wonderful few days in Marrakech staying at the Riad Maroc. It is a perfect and peaceful place to stay in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. A bit daunting when you first arrive, wondering if you will find your way there again but really not a problem and helps the feeling of being in the heart of Marrakech but in a safe and peaceful neighbourhood.
The bedrooms are quite small but most time is spent in the beautiful courtyard or on the roof terrace.
Would like to praise everyone involved with the Riad, Michele was very prompt and helpful with all her replies when booking plus Jamil and Amina were perfect hosts whilst we were there.
Great value !!
Beautiful authentic riad with amazing hosts!
I went to Riad Maroc for a week with my nearly 2 year old and husband. Booking was easy and the ever helpful Jalil, the house manager met us at the airport. He gave us a quick tour to get our whereabouts and thereafter was always on hand with helpful advice & recommendations. His lovely wife Amina looked after us all, cooking amazing breakfasts (flexible on timing for us as well which was brilliant) and she cooked us delicious dinners, which we enjoyed on the roof terrace having put our toddler to bed. We could therefore get all the benefits of being on holiday without having to worry about babysitters or having an overtired toddler in tow! We also did manage an adult night out as Amina's sister babysat for us and thanks to Amina we also came home with clean laundry.
The location of the riad, although at first seems a little daunting, is brilliant - the sights of the medina all in walking distance and so is the new town - plenty of taxis also on hand if the heat was too much to walk!
I would highly recommend this riad for anyone wanting an authentic, comfortable base to explore Marrakech and perfect place to hire exclusively if you have a little one. Our toddler is still a fortnight later asking for Jalil and Amina - who I wish we could have brought home!
A trip to la ferme Berber for lunch and a swim is a must and the terrace des espices in the souks is a little oasis! Jalil and Michelle have lots of other recommendations.
We will definitely be back!
A haven in Marrakech
Since we have been back from Marrakech many people have asked what the best part of the trip was. Was it the food? The weather? The souks?
When I look back though, the best part of the trip for me was the haven that was this Riad.
The thing that sets it apart from others is that it still feels like a home, not a hotel. Amina who cooks and cleans looks after you like you are family, providing us with evening meals that has made my toes curl with pleasure and breakfasts good enough for kings. Jalil her husband collects us from the airport and provides us with maps, and tips for the local area. I have never felt so looked after. Both speak english and french.
Michele the owner of the Riad is a lovely Brit, who has lived in the USA and seems to know everyone who is anyone in Marrakech and was a great resource for us in terms of the best art exhibitions, events and nicest cafe's to while away the days.
The Riad itself is very well located, in a very well known safe part of town. As we walk home at 11pm each night we chat to the young children still playing out in the streets on our way back, marvelling at their English and trying to use my very rusty French.
Sitting on the terrace at this Riad, drinking mint tea and listening to the late afternoon prayer call has to be by far the best part of my trip to Marrakech.
a truely authentic experience
We really enjoyed our first ever visit to Marrakesh. My husband and I travel a lot and always are keeping an eye for the real deal and this certainly ticked all the boxes. The property was really authentic with so much character, like its owner (Michele) and the staff Jalil and his wife, whom all looked after all our needs and above. The house is big, so you can have your own space and relax in one of the many sitting rooms and read the books on the shelves or sunbath on the terrace and watch the bright blue sky. The home cooked Moroccon food was delicious, and variety great, we enjoyed every meal and breakfast and the special tours that Jalil organised for us. We have so many wonderful pictures and memories, and we certainly will be back. There is so much to see, before we left many said a few days are enough in Marrakesh but I was glad I had booked a week as it did still not feel long enough. We explored the city, the famous places such as the souks, the night market, the tombs, Majorelle gardens and had a fabulous night at Mamounia hotel. We also visited private riads with pools recommended by Michele. The trip to the Atlas Mountains and Quarzazate was breath taking. Best was that we had our own driver, organised by Jalil, so we could go where we wanted without a group of other tourists. We explored many areas and our son did ride the camel many times, but with the real indigious people of the mountains. There is something very special about this place, if you want an authentic experience and the real deal, do not hesitate to book. Thank you to you all, and see you soon again!
Riad Maroc
The owner of Riad Maroc, Michelle, said we would love the house and she was right, we did !
A typical Marrakesh Riad, built as a quadrangle, set around an open square that forms a tranquil part of the house that brings the outside into the home with a couple of trees in pots that climb the three storey building up to the roof terrace.
The rooms are furnished with typical Moroccan furniture and fabrics that have been well chosen to reflect the local taste and colours, all rooms are comfortable and have character, you know you are somewhere different and authentic !
The house manager Jalil and his wife Amina looked after us during our stay, Jalil is available to show guests around the Medina which is good news, you will get lost in the labyrinth of streets at first so take advantage of Jalil on your first day.
We had some terrific breakfasts for very little cost and had one of our evening meals in the Riad, all cooked to perfection by Amina, the local restaurants are good value and the food is very good indeed.
However, i would recommend that you eat on the street at least one night, the main square goes through a remarkable transformation at around 4pm, an army of chaps turn up with carts of steel stanchions, bench seats and bbqs and build an outside restaurant that seats about 500, again the food is very good and for very little cost you can eat well and enjoy a unique experience.
A splendid holiday all round, interesting sights, sounds and spicy smells, good food and new experiences all coupled with a relaxed and informal Riad with lovely staff and Michelle, a delightful owner who offers a good welcome, would we go back ??.....Yes we would it's splendid.
Authentic Moroccan Experience
We went as a family of 5 including our three large teenage+ boys never having been to North Africa before. It was really nice to be met at the airport by such a friendly person, Jalil, he guided and looked after us well all week, there when we wanted him and his advice but not over-powering. It was the middle of August and sweltering and Ramadan started whilst we were there which added to the experience. We found the house comfortable and you could shelter from the heat downstairs and with fans slept ok at night. When the sun went down the upstairs terrace was great and we took most of our meals up there. Sitting out til late playing cards was lovely as a family.
As strict vegetarians we were a bit worried about how we would go on with food but Amina's cooking exceeded our best hopes. She was so friendly that every time we went back to base she was there with the mint tea. Fresh ingredients, lovely breakfasts - pancakes, fresh orange juice, evening meals with her peach sorbet....we could go on. (we did also enjoy Earth vegetarian cafe in the medina for a couple of lunches).
The house was well positioned in the old part of the city and once used to the hustle and bustle and (for us) a completely different culture felt safe. Safer than any British city that you might wander around after midnight on a Saturday night.
I'm not sure I would recommend the trip up to the mountains as it was almost as busy up there as in the city and in that heat the journey wasn't the greatest. We all enjoyed a day out at a pool though for a proper rest day, reading and swimming. Finally we loved the (small) but beautiful Majorelle gardens.
A week to remember.
A special Riad
This was our first time in Marrakech, we liked and enjoyed it very much!
This is a lovely riad, the location is magical in the heart of medina, an oasis of peace carefully and very well restored by Michele, a really friendly and wonder woman!!
The riad felt like a real home, perfectly managed by Michele, Jalil and Amina, all always ready to help you.
We highly recommend to taste food in the riad: it was really excellent, very good breakfast and special Maroccan dinner.
We really thank you all and hope to meet you again !!
Amazing riad in the heart of Marrakesh Medina.
We spent 5 days in this beautiful riad and we enjoyed every minute of it. Michele is a wonderful host and very helpful too. Jalil and Amina took good care of us too. We already miss Amina's gorgeous chicken and lamb tagine. The best home cooked meal in Marrakesh. We also had very good breakfast on the rooftop terrace. Riad Maroc is in a great place to explore the Medina and the Souks. It's close to the museums too. Michele recommended great cafes and restaurants. 5-star service and very friendly atmosphere.
We'll definitely be back one day!
Homely Authentic Riad with Fantastic Hospitality
We stayed at Riad Maroc during our ten day stay in Morocco and loved everything about it. It felt like a real home from home for the five of us. Located on an authentic Marrakech Derb and 10 mins from Jema El F'na Riad Maroc was really handy to get to and once behind the rather impressive front door we really felt private and away from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Riad has been sympathetically restored and decorated providing a genuine and honest feel of a Marrakechi home. As I've said we had a great time much of which was due to our hosts Michelle, Jalil and Amina. We had breakfast each morning which are highly recommended and very reasonable but it is Amina's skills re. evening meals which were amazing !! Could go on and on about the tagine and tangia we had but any words would be inadequate - this is a must. Jalil was a godsend and helped/advised us on all matters practical. Nothing was too much trouble and he was always happy to help. Michelle was delightful and fab at making sure we were comfortable and at ease.
Have been disappointed when booking accomodation on the internet previously but the photos do not this Riad justice. A real character property and big part of making our stay in Morocco a truly joyous one.
A Wonderful Stay
We would definately recommend a lift from the airport by Jalil. It was lovely to be greeted with his welcoming smile and the Riad itself would be quite hard to find on your own for the first time. The location of the Riad really is perfect however, just a short walk to the souks and main square and great for catching taxis further afield.
Marrakech is an insane mix of people, cars, horse drawn carriages, donkeys, bartering, tea, heat, colour and new experiences...wonderful but tiring...and I cannot explain just how relaxing and quiet the Riad was to come back to.
We ate every meal at the Riad - the breakfast so big that we didnt need lunch and delicious mountains of food in the evening too. Amina will prepare whatever Moroccan food you desire and all of it is fantastic. I speak only a little French and Amina only a little English but it was surprising how easy it was to have a gossip whilst enjoying a very informative cooking lesson! She works really hard keeping the Riad looking clean and tidy.
We would highly recommend a visit to the beautiful Majorelle Gardens, Les Bains de Marrakech for an afternoon of complete indulgence, Les Jardins de Kesali for a day by the pool, massage and yet more food...and bringing an empty suitacase for all the amazing things you'll want to buy in the souks. Should you decide to venture into the mountains on the day trip, we would recommend going early on in your holiday or getting Jalil to take you. The Moroccans are lovely people but our driver did have a lot of 'friends' who tried their hardest to sell you things and it got quite stressful having to refuse time after time (as we'd already bought all of what we wanted already).
That said, we enjoyed a million new experiences, had a fantastic time overall and have some wonderful photos to prove it.
Beautiful Riad Maroc
We have just returned from a lovely stay at the Riad Maroc. Jalil, Amina and Kota dealt with our every need, and couldn't do enough for us. Amina and Kota's cooking is excellent, the breakfast is fantastic good value too. We were fortunate to be there whilst Michele was, she was very friendly and welcoming. We feel we have made a true friend.
The Riad itself has been extensively restored by Michele, and is absolutely charming, we loved it. When the sun goes down Jalil lights the little lanterns throughout the Riad, and makes it seem quite magical.
Its location is in the heart of the Medina, so you are within easy reach of the hustle and bustle of Marrakech. Jalil will arrange any trips and sort out the price with the taxi's. We were there as a family of eight adults and a toddler, for my husbands 60th birthday. Jalil arranged for us to have Morrocan musicians, Amina and Kota cooked us a special birthday meal. Michele joined us for the music and dancing and a great time was had by all.
A holiday and birthday to remember, can't wait to go back.
Thankyou so much Michele, Jalil Amina and Kota xxxx
perfectly pampered!
What a magical place...
The Riad Maroc is beautifully restored and not overdone so is really authentic.
Jalil, Amina and Kota completely spoilt us - Amina is a superb cook, and the cookery lessons are a must for anyone who likes their food.
We recommend breakfast everyday, then eating in every other evening - good restaurants include Cafe de Poste and La Trattoria, both in the Ville Nouvelle, for good european cuisine on other occasions, and anything Jalil recommends. After dinner head to the main square and drink in coffee and the wonderful atmosphere..
if you have time take a trip into the mountains - the visit to a berber house was one of our top highlights.
Michelle is also a great companion - a great hostess if you are lucky enough that she is there when you are.
I particularly liked all the books available at the Riad Maroc - it made it a true home from home for me.
We will definitely be back sometime - since returning home I have been told several times how well I look - 'completely de-stressed' - and this after several souk expeditions buying lovely things for home.
It was a privilege to get to know Marrakech, Riad Maroc and its people - I cannot recommend it more highly!
A Great Place in Marrakech
Thoroughly recommend the airport pickup. The Riad is just so nice and exactly what we were looking for. The hosts were absolutely lovely. Jalil and his family are just so wonderful, looking after your every need without pretention. The meals there are very very nice and I even managed to get some cooking lessons last minute to fit with our busy schedule. Day trips, recommendations on best shops, advices on prices, everything you need just ask as you would ask an old friend and Jalil and his wife will be there to help you the best they can. Trips, cooking courses, nothing they can't do.
The Riad is in the northern medina, just a few minutes walk away from the main attractions, taxies are just around the corner. Perfect for people after a true exciting and wonderful place. Forget about touristy hotels, this riad is a great taste of the moroccan life. Can't wait to go again it is like going back to a long lost family.
Special Holiday
Our first visit to Marrakesh and we chose Riad Maroc on friend's recommendation . We were very happy with the Riad it is really pretty and a cool oasis of calm to return to after a day in the heat and mayhem of the souks and the square. Jalil and Amina the housekeepers were lovely and looked after us well. Amina cooked us some wonderful tajines and made us great breakfasts each morning. The Riad was cleaned regularly and tidied, all we had to do was relax and take in the ambience and atmosphere. We had a few forays out of the medina to the Atlas Mountains and Marjorelle Gardens, but mainly stayed within the old city walls. We wanted to experience the culture of Marrakesh and we were not disappointed with our choice of accommodation. Riad Maroc is charming, enchanting and magical, and we would happily recommend it to anyone wantiing somewhere memorable to stay - we loved it.
Marrakech in October
This is a fabulous oasis away from all the bussle of Marrakech and you are looked after to perfection by the housekeeper Amina and her husband Jalil. The Riad is simple, beautifully furnished, scrupulously clean, the rooms quite small but incredible value for money and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a tranquil holiday in the Medina. The cooking is fantastic and better than some of the best restaurants in Marrakech!
Magical Maroc
Riad Maroc is an oasis of peace and tranquillity, within the unique geography of the Medina walls and only 10 minutes walk away from Jemaa El Fna and the souks, as well as Gueliz - don't be put off by the twists and turns on the way in, which in fact you will master immediately. Michele has created a beautiful and elegant home, in the traditional style with original features and gorgeous objects. We particularly liked the bathrooms with their carved wooden doors and stunning beaten copper basins (and the giant bath!). We stayed during the heat of late July, but it was amazing how cool the riad always was when we returned with our purchases, to be revived by Amina with a tray of freshly-made mint tea.
You get to know a country through its people, and Jalil and Amina could not be better ambassadors for the Moroccan traditions of grace, warmth and hospitality. Amina’s cooking was staggeringly good: we particularly enjoyed her tajine, but everything she made was legendary. A keen cook myself, I came away with detailed instructions and bags of spices to try to recreate the magic at home. When she’s not in the kitchen, Amina takes very good care of the house: it is always spotless. Jalil speaks excellent English and is a fountain of knowledge, everything from how much to pay for your lanterns and kilims, to current restaurant ratings. He is also a great tour guide: our favourite outing was to the Atlas mountains, including breakfast at a real village home where three families and three cows contentedly share the same indoor living space, to Setti Fatma where we climbed a waterfall (Cascade d’Ourika – there are seven waterfalls, but we only attempted the one). After our “strenuous” exertions, we sat in the cool of a local purveyor of carpets, drinking "Moroccan whisky” and languidly bargaining. It was a very special day.
We were really impressed by the ways in which we were looked after at Riad Maroc - not just the superb service but the discretion and sensitivity with which it was provided. We came away feeling entirely rested and relaxed, laden down with wonderful Moroccan artefacts for our home, full of Amina’s wonderful food, and itching to return as soon as possible.
Oasis!
Imagine spending a day in the hustle and bustle of Moroccos Marrakech, wandering the souks, eating exquisite cuisine, shopping till you drop and sipping coffees at one of the many cafes. It is hard work sometimes, especially in the heat of the day. Then, you wander back to Riad Moroc . Oh my goodness! Tranquil, authentic, charming and quite honestly the best treasure I have found anywhere in the world. You will simply fall in love with it, and thats before you walk in the front door. The riad has been kept to its original charm. Traditional, with the most sumptuous bedrooms, and delightful bathrooms. My favorite being the blue room downstairs and the magnificent bath which I happened to fall asleep in a few times. Riad Maroc has the most attentive staff who will dote on you, prepare you most awesome meals when you need, and give you tips about Marrakech that only the locals know about. Breakfast on the roof terrace is a must and taking mint tea there in the afternoon is a great way to relax. The most wonderful place to stay for a romantic getaway, and fabulous to go there with a group of friends.
I cannot recommend this Riad enough. You will fall deeply in love with it and will go back and back and back. I certainly have!!
MORE THAN A HOME FROM HOME...
This was my 5th holiday at Riad Maroc in as many years which should really say it all...but, I can't help enthusing just a bit more. First, the roof terrace...whether for breakfast or an evening meal I can't think of a more perfect way to either start or end your day. The riad is perfectly located in such a city of contrasts that one minute you can be chilling out on the roof terrace in total silence while only being a couple of minutes from the bustling souks bargain hunting. Riad Maroc has been traditionally restored keeping the character and heart of this charming house very much intact. While some riads have been restored to such an extent that they resemble a chic boutique hotel room anywhere in the world Riad Maroc has not been allowed to fall into that trap, a large part of this is to do with the warm welcome and high standard of service you will receive from the terrific house staff. From Jalil's smile upon meeting you at the airport to Amina and Cowtar's sublime cooking you will not find fault with the hospitality.Infact you will soon wonder why the Moroccan search engine is not called "Ask Jalil" instead of Jeeves! Jalil's local knowedge is not only encyclopedic but most helpfully, in English too. I honestly feel that I am going to visit family friends when staying at Riad Maroc. TOP TIP try a meal at the house early on during your stay, it'll be better than most restaurants, then you'll have time to discover your favourite tagine!
Fantastic riad
I was very happy with Michele's riad. It is beautifully restored, kept very clean, and in a convinient central location. The staff were lovely, looked after our every need, and cooked very good food. Michele spent time giving us advice as to what to do in Marrakech which improved our holiday. Really couldn't have asked for more.
Transported to a different world
This riad is in the heart of the city and only 5 minutes walk from the souks. It is a traditional property with original tiles and other features and absolutely ideal for those wishing to enjoy the rich culture of Marrakesh. The staff are all lovely people for whom nothing is too much trouble. Not only do they prepare excellent food if required but they will also organise trips,eg to the Atlas mountains, to a kasbah or to a local hamman. Jalil has even taken us to the souks to assist with bartering. The property is kept very clean and is extremely comfortable. We have been twice, can't wait to go again and have also recommended it to our friends.
*****Holiday
I have been to Marrakech many times but this property was by far the best. It is traditional, typical, magic, romantic and you forget the rest of the world, which is what holidays are all about. The owner and the caretaker are adorable which reflects on your holiday. If it is you first time in Marrakech, you will have a culture shock but this riad will give you the comfortable feeling of having your own house, hidden away in a crazy world. The service to my opinion is better than in a 5star hotel because it is personal. It's location, at first difficult to find (Jalil will be helping you out), is central and the best restaurant a just there.
A must.....!
The icing on the cake!
I have just come back from a week in Marrakech.
Marrakech was amazing but the icing on the cake was definetly the service we received at the Riad. We were treated like Royalty and Jalil was definetly a heaven sent for us. It was our first visit to the city and we were presently surprised. Though we relied on Jalil on the first couple of days we soon became very independent.
When we first arrived we got a bit of a culture shock, especially finding the riad iniatially, but once we got there were were pleased.
The property was clean, the ladies made sure the house was cleaned on a regular basis.
The meals at the house were AMAZING!
I would definetly recommend this to a friend. I travelled with friends and family and we all said that we would be back.
