Description

This area is an absolute walkers paradise full of red squirrels, deer, owls, red kites even occasional wild boar. The views around are spectacular towards the west for beautifull sunsets and east towards the Auverne and the foothills of the Massif Central.

La Chouette has been a three year project to fully restore it to a beautiful house, in sympathy with its age, and character. The thick stone walls keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter, and for those who want complete peace and rest it is perfect. It is also ideally situated for activities like golf - 3 nearby courses, canoeing down the Dordogne, riding, walking, touring the wonderful country, medieval towns and chateaux nearby. In July/August the opera season at Castelnau near St Cere, about 35 mins away, is an absolute must for music lovers.

There are several electric heaters and all beds have electric blankets. Please be aware that being on three floors there are several staircases and external steps, small children may well need that bit of extra supervision. We do not have a pool but there are excellent public pools in both Beaulieu and Meyssac and the Relais de Quercy in Meyssac has a good outdoor restaurant and lovely pool. The Dordogne is a hop, skip and a jump away with many places to cool off and some really nice river beaches for swimming. Keeping cool should not be a problem.

Beaulieu has many shops, banks, restaurants and hotels and markets twice a week. The Ecomarche at Altillac, just the other side of the road bridge over the Dordogne in Beaulieu is excellent for all normal food and wine shopping needs. Lunch beside the river at the Hotel des Charmilles in Beaulieu is always special. If you prefer to people watch then the square has several brasseries and hotels where you can lunch outside. At Meyssac the Relais du Quercy is well worth a lunch and even a swim. Don't miss a visit to Bretenoux - the old square has markets weekly and Les Saveurs restaurant does an excellent 'plat du jour'. The medieval architecture here is well worth the visit. Driving up the Dordogne to Argentat is a lovely run and lunch at Le Fouillade hotel under the enormous plain tree is very special. A walk down the old quay afterwards and a coffee by the riverside works well. We will provide further information leaflets etc at the house for your interest.

Relatively short drives take you to some spectacular places such as Rocamadour, Autoire, St Cere, Figeac, Gramat and Pompadour, the home of the the French National stud and where displays of horsemanship take place in the beautifull bowl shaped arena in front of the Chateau.

For those of a sporting nature, the river Dordogne offers many oportunities to canoe and fish, with canoes for hire in several nearby locations. Remember the sun cream and hat !

There is an open car port/garage and plenty of space for another two cars to park on site. An old dependance, used as a store at present, still awaits our reconstruction ideas and actions. The garden area is mainly grass with some shrubs an several mature walnut trees, home to various birds - woodpeckers and little owls who have a propensity to sleep on the side of the covered chimneys and often fall in ! We have rescued several from the woodburner and the other open fireplace ( fortunately unharmed) and this is the reason it is is called La maison Chouette. Chouette being the french noun for Owl and as an adverb it means " something well done".
