Description
In the St. Tropez area there is constant debate about where the 'right' place is to live. In truth it depends on what you're looking for. But one thing's for sure, no matter if it's the lively St Tropez clubs, restaurants and shops, the beach, some peace and quiet or a combination of this and more, all tastes can be accommodated at La Retirado.
La Retirado is first and foremost a second home for a London family and it shows. Both the location and the property were chosen for the privacy yet proximity to fulfil a wide variety of interests including watersports, fine restaurants and shopping, beaches and night life, plus general good fun.
The property covers about 5 acres and is accessed via a private drive. There is a guardien or caretaker called Dominique who lives in a cottage half way up the drive. He and his dogs take care of the maintenance, security and dealing with the pool man, the gardeners, repair men etc., etc. Dominique is a treasure and makes the stay of guests safe and enjoyable.
La Retirado is south of La Garde-Freinet which is very important. The village sits at the top of the Massif des Maures and where a property sits is crucial in relation to views and sunshine. La Retirado is on the 'prime' side of Les Massif's, so facing the ocean with unbroken views of the bay of St. Tropez dead ahead, the Alps to the east and the vineyards of Provence to the west. The views are truely breathtaking. New guests simply stand on the terrace taking in the scale of the 180 degree scenery whenever they first arrive.
The property is essentially on one level, with the landscaping providing a sense of space and light inside the house. The main bedrooms are at opposite corners of the property so complete privacy is guaranteed. The pool area is off to one side of the property, next to the master bedroom so one can 'fall' out of bed into the pool.
The property is maintained to a high standard including the specification of bedding, laundry, furniture, etc. La Retirado is a home, not a holiday let and it shows. Guests return year after year and with youngsters who have gone from 8 to 18 still choosing to holiday in La Retirado with their parents.
The gardens and sorrounding land are maintained regularly as the owners take a keen interest in the layout and feel of the gardens, plants and flowers.
The house has an informality which allows guests to relax and feel at home any time of the year. The visitors book is full of very complimentary comments to reinforce this too. La Retirado reflects the style and 'feel' of Provence, it shuns glitz and embraces natural materials and fabrics.
Finally the property can sleep 10 quite easily (or 12 if four don't mind sharing one room).
