Description
The Cottage is the former stable block for Viewfield House and was built in 1886; a part of it was made into a cottage for the gardener forty years later. It was extensively modernised into a house for Hugh Macdonald's family in 1989. It is now a comfortable, well equipped, centrally heated family house standing in the extensive grounds of Viewfield House and enjoys all the benefits of Viewfield's woodland gardens and proximity to Portree. The views to the front of the cottage are of the woodland and the gardens, to the back the cottage is open to the hill and you may walk straight to the top of Fingal's seat.
The back garden enjoys considerable privacy and is a natural sun trap. Patio doors open out onto a terrace from the sitting room.
The village of Portree with all of its shops, restaurants and Pubs is an easy walk of less than half a mile from the cottage, yet it feels as if you are in the country.
The cottage can sleep up to eight people and is ideal for an extended family party; it remains cosy and comfortable for a smaller group or even a couple.
The accommodation consists of: a large sitting room with open fire, colour television and DVD player; kitchen with electric cooker, refrigerator, deep freeze, dishwasher, microwave, food processor and telephone; utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer; lavatory; and one downstairs double bedded bedroom. Upstairs there are two single bedrooms, one twin bedded room, one double bedded room (with shower room en-suite) and a bathroom. The cottage is centrally heated and has French windows opening from the sitting room onto a patio with large open garden beyond. There is ample parking in front of the house.
All bed linen is provided. Towels are available by request (we may ask for a towel deposit of £25 on arrival). Guests are expected to leave the cottage clean at the end of their stay, reporting any damage or breakages. Pets are welcome by arrangement.
Viewfield House is a country hotel of uniquely unspoilt character and has been in the Macdonald family for more than 200 years. Viewfield operates as a hotel from April until October each year. Viewfield sleeps up to 22 in 11 en-suite bedrooms. Viewfield House is available for self catering lets to large family parties during the winter months at the owners descretion. Portree is the 'capital' of Skye and an excellent centre for excursions. Portree has two supermarkets, as well as a baker, butcher, wholefood shop, banks, post office, churches, chemist, newsagent, cottage hospital, swimming pool and a variety of other shops.
Elsewhere on the island you can find: golf, fishing, boating, hill-walking, rock-climbing, diving, pony-trekking, castles, brochs, museums, potteries, craft shops, beaches, and of course, breathtaking scenery

Directions
The Gardeners cottage is easy to find as you enter Portree by road from the south. Take the driveway signposted Viewfield House on your left not long after you enter the village. The entrance to the drive is directly off the A87; turn left at the sign just before the Portree Filling Station. The filling station is an easily spotted landmark, slow down when you see it and turn left fractionally before you reach it, at the sign for "Viewfield House" and "Skye Shrubs".
