As well as having a gas stove, microwave and all the other kitchen equipment you might possibly need to properly self cater, you always have the option to eat at Cabier Ocean Lodge restaurant on the terrace overlooking the sea.

CABIER SELF CATERING
Whilst most people who have self catered on holiday before know roughly how much it costs to self cater in the UK, France or Italy, it can be a worry about how much it costs to live in the Caribbean, totally or partially self catering if you have not done it before.

The following might help you assess how much it might cost. During a recent two week stay (August 2011), we self-catered and ate certain meals at Cabier Ocean Lodge as a matter of choice, although we could easily have self catered all of the holiday. Currency rates are converted roughly at USD $1.50 =£1 and ECD $4 =£1.

SELF CATERING INFORMATION
Grenville, our biggest local town, is 20 minutes away by car and has several supermarkets (more local) and a vibrant fruit/veg/fish and meat market. If you are not hiring a vehicle then Bruno the chef at the Lodge goes in every other day to buy fresh produce for the restaurant and will take you there. There is also a regular minibus service from Crochu village.

You can self cater lunch each day preparing a mixture of things bought from the ladies in Grenville market, through to tuna salad, bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado salads and chicken. There is plenty to buy from supermarkets or in the market. Chicken is not expensive. Vegetables are whatever is in season and there are usually aubergine /peppers/lettuce/ tomatoes/avocado/sweet potato/beetroot/spring onions/onions/herbs as well as more local vegetables such as breadfruit, plantains etc – all available from a ladies with market stalls at around $ECD 4 (£1 stg) a pound. Fruit is plentiful: Mangoes, oranges, bananas, paw paw, passion fruit, papaya and pineapples are in season several times a year, often sold from roadside stalls in villages and cost around ECD$5 (£1.25) for a number of each.

Grenville also has a fish market. Fish will have been caught that morning. Expect to pay ECD $12/$20 for a fish that would feed 4 to 6 persons. Wine works out at around £5 to £10 a bottle depending on variety and country. Carib beer is cheap at around ECD $2 - $3 (50p – 75p) a bottle, as are soft drinks if bought in the shops.

Grenada has a significant population who are returnees from UK/USA/Canada - so there are well stocked shops and supermarkets to serve them and the yachting community with a lot of the goods you would find in the UK or USA. There will occasionally be shortages of certain imported items depending on when the last shipment came in.

EATING & DRINKING AT CABIER OCEAN LODGE
The best way to illustrate the costs of eating at Cabier Ocean Lodge is to review our last bill from the Lodge restaurant for a two week stay at Two Bays in August 2011. The following will help:

The restaurant at Cabier does breakfast – coffee/juice/egg/fruit/toast/jam/cheese/tomatoes /salami for $USD 11 – (£7.50). Lovely as it is to eat breakfast on their terrace overlooking the ocean, you can also do breakfast inexpensively yourself sitting enjoying the view from your own veranda. Dinner averaged USD $25 (£16.70) per head, bottles of wine averaged USD$26 (£17.33) each, Cocktails (Iris makes really large strong ones) averaged USD$ 5.63 (£3.75). Soft drinks were USD $2.25 (£1.50) and Carib beer USD $2.25 (£1.50). You can get a Roti (filled chapatti with either chicken or fish curry) with salad for lunch at USD$5.87 (£3.90).

We hope that helps to gauge the costs of Caribbean self-catering and eating out locally for your holiday budgeting. As you can see costs at the restaurant are actually cheaper than in a lot of provincial areas in France. If you should have any specific queries about self catering at Two Bays and eating at Cabier Ocean Lodge then please do email us.

EATING OUT

There are plenty of restaurants in and around St George’s and Grand Anse and in Grenville and other main towns and at tourist spots and range from Gary Rhodes at the Calabash (very expensive) down to the restaurant over the supermarket in Grenville which has a wide range of local freshly cooked soul food and is usually packed at lunchtime with locals, which is incredibly good value where a good lunch and beer might come to $12.50 each if you have an additional portion. Generally do not expect haute cuisine in the Caribbean.

Dining room

Seats 6

Eating is either done at the breakfast bar or normally at the large hard wood dining table on the terrace looking out over the garden and the sea. There are external lights on the veranda for evening.

With the doors open the deep shaded veranda is an extension of the sitting room with views over the garden to the beach and sea. The veranda has a double swing seat and single swing seat to relax and doze in whilst looking at the view.

Cabier's breeze is assisted by two large ceiling fans and the high ceiling.

Two Bays is maid serviced each day except Sunday.

Free WiFi and internet access at Two Bays together with free Wi-Fi, internet access and fax available down at Cabier Ocean Lodge about 100 yards away. There is a computer there for guests to use.

There is a satelite TV available and DVD player for Two Bays guests to use at Cabier Ocean Lodge.

We allow smoking - but only on the verandas.

Air conditioning, Computer available, Daily maid services, Fax, Safe, Satellite/cable, Wireless internet access, Linen and towels provided, Smoking allowed

Other notes

There is room for two cars to park in the car port area by the pool and at the Lodge car park 100 yards away.

Two Bays sits in a natural environment so there will be occasional visits by gekkoes and stick insects as well as by more colourful visitors such as humming birds and doves, although these will stick to the garden. These make up part of the vibrant local natural population. There is nothing seriously harmful in the natural population on Grenada but obvious precautions need to be taken at night against mosquitoes. Generally we are not much affected by them at Two Bays because of the height and breeze although there are more around during the rainy season.
