Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, is well known and proud of both its history and architecture. The city is popular with both visitors and local inhabitants as throughout the year it has many special events including Internation Festivals, The Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo and the Hogmanay / New Year celebrations to name but a few. The town has over many years grown around Edinburgh Castle spreading out from the fortified walled Old Town in the 'heart of the city centre" to the Georgian New Town. Further developments have brought about this vibrant modern city. It has throughout all these changes managed to maintain its magnificent architecture and natural beauty and these are readily available to be seen by the discerning traveller. Both the Old Town and the New Town are World Heritage sites. As the city centre is so compact, it is full of fascinating places, many with historic significance and most of which are within a short walking distance of our apartments. The historic and magnificent Edinburgh Castle is on the doorstep and it houses the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny, as well as displaying many items of historic interest. From its position on top of Castlehill, Edinburgh Castle has excellent views over the city and surrounding countryside. The shores of the Forth Estuary and the Port of Leith lie to the north and moored in the Leith is the former Royal Yacht Britannia. Below the Castle. also to the north is Princes Street, a good shopping area and Princes Street Gardens, an ideal place in which to relax and enjoy the gardens. Lying below the Castle to the south is the well known and popular Grassmarket. Leading from the Castle down to Holyrood Palace is the Royal Mile and here there are numerous shops, places of interest, museums, restaurants and bars.

As you exit the Airport Bus in Waverley Bridge or when you ascend from Edinburgh Waverley Railway Station you will see almost directly ahead of you Edinburgh Castle on Castlehill.
Turn left and walk the short distance to a mini roundabout and there turn right into Market Street. Walk uphill towards the Castle and at the top of that street you will come to a junction. There is a statue on your left and the Castle still stands straight ahead. Cross the road at the traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing, turn right before walking up Mound Place continuing to head towards the Castle. After a short distance, Mound Place takes a sharp left turn and then becomes very steep. At the top of that steep slope you will come to the junction with Castlehill. Turn right and after a few yards you will reach the entrance to the Castle Esplanade. Immediately to the left of that entranceway there are a flight of steps (Castle Wynd North steps) and if you descend these steps it will bring you onto Johnston Terrace.
Alternative route and not so steep would be to turn left as you enter onto Waverley Bridge
and walk the short distance to a mini roundabout and there turn right into Market Street. Walk uphill towards the Castle and at the top of that street you will come to a junction. There Cross the road at the traffic light controlled pedestrian crossing, and at this time turn left and continue up the Mound. As you are passing (on your left) the Bank of Scotland Headquarters, the footway turns right and approaches the junction with the Lawnmarket / High Street (both of which are part of the Royal Mile). At that junction turn right into the Lawnmarket and walk about 50 metres up the Lawnmarket when you will see a mini roundabout in the roadway and there you will see Johnston Terrace leading off to the left.
