Well positioned near the centre of the lovely coastal town of North Berwick, 47westgate is an elegant self-catering flat in an attractive listed Victorian building. Newly refurbished and modernised to a high standard, it is well equipped and offers a great base for a holiday or short break. 47 westgate is conveniently located within North Berwick at the end of the High Street and within five minutes walk of the station, the beach, the golf course and the harbour. This busy little town offers cafés, bars, restaurants, galleries and a good range of shops.
The bright and airy flat accommodates up to four adults in two bedrooms – one king size double (or twin if preferred) with en-suite bath and shower, and one twin bedded room. There is a separate shower room. The beds in the twin room are made from the recycled pine pews of the Abbey Church in North Berwick.
The lounge with its tall ceilings and large bay window is traditional in style with a good outlook and views to the harbour and the Sailing Club starters’ hut. There is a flat screen television and DVD player.
The kitchen and dining room have been modernised in a crisp modern style and offer a full range of equipment: oven, electric hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The adjoining utility room has freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, and a traditional pulley for hanging up that wet golfing or sailing gear.
The house is centrally heated and has the original natural pine flooring throughout. It is provided with a wi-fi facility linked to an internet connection.
The East Lothian coast provides a wonderful landscape with sandy bays and rocky cliffs, and the outlying islands, the Bass Rock, May Island and Craigleith, are home to many bird species including puffins, cormorants, gulls and many others. The Bass Rock is the largest island gannet colony in the world. North Berwick is home to the Scottish Seabird Centre with its battery of webcams positioned on the surrounding islands. www.seabird.org
Boat trips from the harbour offer tours for bird watching and spotting the marine life such as seals and dolphins. Boats for fishing trips are available for hire.
The East of Scotland is known as the home of golf, and North Berwick offers a superb base for a golfing trip, with ready access to the West Course, Muirfield, Gullane, Dunbar and many more. There are more than twenty golf courses within easy reach in East Lothian, and many more in and around Edinburgh and also across the Forth in Fife where you might want to make a pilgrimage to St Andrews.

There is a wide range of features of interest for the holidaymaker. There are ruined medieval castles at Tantallon with its dramatic cliff top location and at Dirleton with its superb herbaceous border. The Museum of Flight offers an opportunity to board Concorde and the Myreton Motor Museum has a wonderful collection of vintage cars, motor cycles and commercial vehicles.
Most of Scotland’s whiskies are produced in the highlands and islands but nearby Pencaitland is the home of the Glenkinchie Distillery where it is possible to take part in a visitor tour and sample the ‘Edinburgh Malt’.
Just half an hour away by train, Edinburgh offers a unique collection of attractions for the visitor. The Castle, the Royal Yacht Britannia, Holyrood Palace and the Parliament building are all “must-sees”. There is also a fantastic selection of bars and restaurants, including a number with Michelin stars, to savour and enjoy. The world famous International Festival and Fringe provide an unparalleled range of music, drama, art and other entertainment during August every year.
