Description
La Forêt is situated midway between Beaune and Autun, two very different towns, with a wealth of beautiful architecture and Roman remains, close to the famous vineyards of Bourgogne. There is a rear garden with facilities for outdoor dining, barbecue, and children's play area. Local supermarkets, banks, petrol stations, restaurants, etc are only five kilometer away in either direction at Nolay and Epinac, both of which have a weekly market.
The route from La Foret to Beaune passes through the vineyards of St Romain, Auxey Duresses, Pommard, Volnay, Mersault etc., with many opportunities for wine tasting. The local chateaux of Sully, Couches and La Rochepot are well worth visiting. Autun (Augustodunum to the Romans) boasts many remains of Roman occupation, including an amphitheatre which is the scene of a wonderful historical spectacle, including singing, chariot racing, gladiators etc., and this takes place every year in August. Autun is the gateway to the Morvan, a national park of outstanding beauty with lakes, beaches, water-sports and ample opportunities to see local wildlife. The Morvan also houses the Museum to the French Resistance and Bibracte, on Mont Beauvray, the museum and archaeological site giving an insight into the area's Roman and Celtic history. This region has lots of cafes and picnic areas.
Beaune is a beautiful medieval town with ramparts and moat. The Hospice de Beaune has a spectacular tiled roof and museum showing how the poor were nursed in former times. The Saturday market is an extremely popular occasion with both locals and tourists and home to numerous wine merchants and antique dealers. For children there is a park with animals, swimming pool, cinema and bowling.
