La Vieille Etable has a16 metre long ground floor with spacious lounge areas, wood burning fire, dining area, shower room and fully equipped kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine.
On the gallery first floor are 2 double bedrooms, 2 twin bedded rooms, 2 single bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and another shower room. Most of the bedrooms have additional space for a child’s bed or cot if required. The ground floor lounge area also has two sofa beds for occasional use or for clients unable to reach the upper floor. There is English satellite TV as well as French and a DVD player (bring along a few favourites) and a box of assorted games to keep the children happy. Table tennis and table football are also available. The gite has its own terrace with garden furniture and BBQ and there is ample parking space for several cars. The 10 x 5 metre swimming pool has surrounding wall and self locking gate for client privacy and the safety of small children.
'LE GRAND BOIS' was originally constructed around the 1850's as a small farm with outbuildings around a courtyard, with a well providing the water supply, a stone oven in which to bake the bread and stables for the farm animals. This has now been tastefully converted into our home, a large gite which can accommodate up to 12 persons and a small gite for 2/4 persons. The bread oven and the well remain but we have built a 10 x 5 meter swimming pool in the garden for the use of our clients. The large garden has fruit trees and nut trees and our own row of vines producing two varieties of eating grapes. We are surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers, maize and wheat. At Le Grand Bois - Gites you can enjoy a peaceful, stress-free holiday beside the swimming pool or you can use the superb facilities as a base to explore the many attractions and places of interest offered by the south-west region of France! Househunting in France? We may also be able to help. Contact for details.
'Le Grand Bois - Gites' is situated in the delightful rolling French countryside, on the outskirts of a small hamlet, surrounded by sunflower fields and vineyards, between Cognac and Bordeaux. Barbezieux and Blanzac are our nearest towns, both approx. 7 kms. away and each having supermarkets, banks, chemists, bars and restaurants. Royan, with its sandy beaches is around an hour's drive. Nearby are lakeside beaches, picnic areas, an indoor leisure complex with pools and ice-skating rink and lakes with daily fishing licences. Enjoy local produce at home, in the gite, or in one of the many excellent but inexpensive restaurants. Try the confit of duck, fois gras, Charente melons, goat’s cheese and seasonal nuts and fruits. There are frequent street markets to browse around and in the summer months there are many traditional fetes and brocantes (flea markets) to enjoy. The Charente is the sunniest region in France next to the Cote d'Azur with lots of long hot days and wonderful sunsets.
Notes: Sleeping arrangements can be made on the ground floor where there is also a shower room with toilet for clients unable to access the upper floor. Considerate pet owners may be able to bring pets if agreed at the time of booking. Reductions in weekly rental will also be considered for bookings of more than 2 weeks and for longer winter lets.

What can we say?

~ an absolutely beautifully restored gite. The photos don't portray it's full beauty! A welcome pack of more than enough essentials and a very hospitable, helpful couple to meet you. We arrived with a few hire car problems, Ian and Linda soon ironed them out. They certainly went out of their way to help us with their knowledge, generosity and kindness. We highly recommend anyone looking for a very clean, comfortable and relaxing holiday with or without children, it's great!! You need a car as it's in a country area. However, it's nearby many towns, an excellent base for touring the South and Western areas of France. The swimming pool is enclosed, safely keeping the children amused for hours. We will be returning to this gite again as soon as we can the tranquillity and sunshine was just what we needed!

Le Grand Bois est Superbe !

When you think of a holiday in France you have an image of superb food and even better wines and then the reality of finding suitable accommdation sets in.
Big cities are not really a holiday if you already live in a big city in your home country - so you plan to head for the countryside and wonder what sort of accommodation is available - no Ritz or Hilton in the countryside - maybe some small hotel/motel with one or two star rating. Even at home these small motels area hit and miss afair. What about a B&B, they can be good sometimes. Then someone suggests a "gite". Never heard of one of those - something like a "cottage" maybe? Oh why not, we'll give it a go...
We have travelled throughout England, Wales, USA, Southern Africa and New Zealand and have never found anything as good as Le Grand Bois in the tiny village of Angeduc. Not only has the property been beautifully renovated by a brilliant Achitect, the owners, Ian and Linda would have to be the best hosts we have ever met anywhere in the countries in which we have travelled. There is a welcoming bottle of Bordeaux wine placed in the gite to set the mood for a great holiday. And it doesn't stop there - everything you need to make you comfortable is thoughtfully included.
With accommodation way beyond expectations the rest is up to you - we travelled throughout the Charente area, usually full day outings and returned to the gite with local produce and wine for a great evenings fare.
Despite a 23 hour flight for us to travel to France from Australia, we will be back at Le Grand Bois for our next holiday, this time with all our family (12 people altogether - three generations) and we will be looking forward to once again catching up with Ian and Linda and enjoying another bottle of wine or two.
Oh! did I mention the wine???

We had agreed as a family that we'd like to go away together as part of my "significant" birthday celebrations. I booked Le Grand Bois and we were delighted to find a beautiful, well equipped and very well maintained traditional property in a huge, very child friendly garden with walled and gated pool. Linda & Ian, the owners, made us very welcome and made sure that we felt we could contact them at any time during our stay with any queries whatsoever. In Fact, one of our party did need to attend A&E and Linda very kindly went along to ensure our lack of detailed French didn't cause difficulties in communications - that made such a difference and gave us the confidence to know that the problem had been thoroughly investigated and treated.
14 of us aged from 6 weeks to 62 years and we had the space and comfort to enjoy our holiday as we each wished. A lovely area for walking and only a short drive to towns and shops. Very well placed for good days out to places like Cognac, Brantome etc with their historic centres and wide variety of restaurants.
We had a wonderful holiday and would heartily recommend Le Grand Bois.
Magical family holiday.

Our entire family 12 of us ranging in age from 1 to 64 enjoyed this wonderful property . the accomodation is superb spacious modern(the bathrooms are a joy)every thing hs been thought about and provided from stairgate ,highchairs, cots, games and even a boat for the pool.the pool is excellent ,gated for safety and is kept spotlessly clean by linda. linda and ian plus there family go out of there way to make sure you enjoy your holiday, nothing is too much trouble. the gite is in a lovely rural setting with safe and easy walking with plenty to see from vinyards(one very nearby to taste and purchase from ,we can recommend all the wines!) to the hamlet with ducks, tractors(we have a grandson obsessed with them) there are plenty of places farther afield for siteseeing trips to the beach, visits to congnac, chateaux the list goes on.we were happy to spend a lot of time at the gite as the weather was fantastic and the pool and lovely garden with lots of room for energitic adults and children but with shade and quiet spots for the more senior. some of our party flew from bristol to bordeaux and as the airport is about an hour and a half away this worked out well.the town of barbezieu is only 6 miles away and has 3 supermarkets bakeries patisseries ,restaurants, banks, etc.we all had a fantastic holiday at this supeb gite it is of 5 star standard with owners to match.we will certainly be returning.

Le Grand Bois Gites.
Review Submitted: June 12, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
It was around five years ago when we first saw the property known as Le Grand Bois. A typically old French farmhouse with numerous barns and outbuildings all set around an internal courtyard which was home to two adopted, feral and very untouchable cats. Linda and Ian had owned the property for about two years at that stage and had sympathetically converted the farmhouse into a modern home for themselves with all creature comforts without losing the French style of architecture and internal ambience.
The barns and outbuildings had yet to be converted into gites, and from their condition at the time, it seemed a daunting if not impossible task. However, having recently seen the results of their labours, Linda and Ian should now be justly proud of their efforts in providing luxury accommodation for their guests in traditional French style.
With their new roof structures completed, the gites are spotlessly clean, very nicely furnished with comfortable beds, well-fitted bathrooms and kitchens and both have wood-burning stoves for those chilly evenings. Outside there are paved terraces with tables and seating to go with the barbecues provided for alfresco dining on the warmer sunny evenings. A wellcome pack of basic foods for breakfast and the bottle of wine on the table adds the finishing touch.
On entering their own farmhouse, it didn’t escape our notice that the feral cats had now made themselves at home as well on their own individual blankets and just love being made a fuss of, obviously, old barns are not the only things that have been converted.
There is a beautiful swimming pool in a sunny position for guests, all surrounded by an orchard and open fields, offering a very peaceful country setting. Nearby towns have several supermarkets for provisions, along with local shops and restaurants. A very relaxing spot to get away from things, with the back-up of Linda and Ian on the premises to help out with anything you need and advice on visiting the nearby towns and attractions. Well worth a visit.
