Description

It was once home to the British admiralty; the Greek royal family and League of Nations founder Jan Smuts. St James was the first resort area developed by the British in the early 1900’s due to its balmy year round climate, Mediterranean-like sunshine and warm sea.

The Villa St James’ tranquil, romantic, rejuvenating and inspiring beauty is ideal for holidays, weddings, honeymoons, special events, and conferences. The Villa is available in its entirety for long or short periods of time. Though the Villa is self-catering and an oasis of privacy, it is maintained at all times by a courteous and professional staff. Accommodation is available by room or by the villa and is available in its entirety for long or short periods of time. Fine catering is available on the premises by superb local chefs.

The Villa St James, simply put, is massive. The Villa accommodates up to 20 people in eight large bedrooms with extra long beds and five bathrooms. Lavish appointments include Frette linens and towels and goose down duvets. Special details include colorful Moroccan kilims, full-length mirrors, art deco light fixtures, antique furniture and accents. Upstairs living quarters have direct access to the back garden. The bedrooms, each unique in character, are located upstairs and have sea and mountain views from one shared furnished enclosed terrace and several private balconies. Each room is named after the local African flower that best embodies the room’s character. You can actually whale watch from each sea facing room.

The Billiard room provides a half sized snooker and billiards table with a view of the pool and to the Indian Ocean. The thick rich red Gabay in the TV room is perfect for sprawling out on the myriad velvet pillows and watching TV, listening to music, playing games, or just plain lounging in style. African animal prints, antique silk gold blinds and views to the ocean and pool make this room rich, witty, and sophisticated. Equipped with satellite TV and surround sound stereo the TV room looks out on the front garden and pool and Indian ocean . From this room you can access the Ship's Bar. The bar is decorated with authentic ship's name plaques, antique mirrors, luxurious velvet banquette, bar stools for eight and various board games. Since the Grape Vine patio is directly outside, the bar is a fabulous spot for sundowner cocktails.

In the front sitting room, which faces the ocean, is a collection of books for guests to enjoy. Curl up in an art deco chair in front of the fireplace or on a cozy sofa and peruse the Villa's diverse selection: books on tourism, nature, culture and history. Get inspired by incredible images from books on photography and art, the Villa's specialty. Listen to any of the 400 cd's on the state of the art hifi. This room leads onto the outdoor dining terrace and pool. The upstairs landing is more than just a passage from room to room, it is a gallery of maps, photographs and other sea going documents. There are places to sit, relax and gaze out of the gorgeous stained glass window.

The outdoor pool is a stone's throw from the shimmering blue Indian Ocean and set amidst an indigenous garden with over 260 rare and well-known plant species. A private poolside hot and cold outdoor shower looks out over False Bay. Spend the afternoon lounging by the pool in the deck chairs, have a game of soccer or badmington on the wide lawn, grill your lunch and have a picnic seaside and poolside. Enjoy evening cocktails and watch the sky change colors at sundown over the Indian Ocean. The front garden is a wonderful and varied place to play and relax.

St James beach is steps from the property, with fascinating rock and tidal pools for swimming, as well as a tennis court. The back garden is an oasis and a sanctuary. With a whale watching deck and an umbrella shaded dining table that seats 14, the back garden is wonderful for many different activities. The mingling of flowers’ perfume with bird songs, looking onto Silvermine Reserve Mountain and out towards Cape Point and False Bay, is an experience truly unique and healing. Dining For your culinary urges, Villa St James offers a gourmet kitchen stocked with cutlery and crockery to serve up to 26 people. With its centerpiece 22-seater dining table, the stately dining room is perfect for throwing an elegant dinner party or hosting an important business meeting. Among the many visual treats in this room are Venetian mirrors, silk curtains, crystal chandeliers, a gilded ceiling, state of the art stereo, views of sea and garden, and deco parquet floors. The grand dining room is truly a regal event. Or you may dine alfresco on one of the many terraces or have a picnic in the lush exotic gardens or barbecue on the braai deck with its magnificent mountain and sea view. Alternatively, dine out at one of the nearby world-renowned restaurants of St James. The Villa also offers full catering.

“A grand way to feel like a real Cape Town local"
It really is a huge villa, with lots of rooms that are neat, clean but may leave you fighting over who gets one of stunning front rooms in particular the one with a 4 poster bed that looks out over the ocean (In our case having done the research and I did a lot of research!! I felt it was only fare I took that room). It is a great place for large groups or a family looking for a bit of space as there is plenty of room and it’s fully equipped with everything you need. The garden area is immaculate, with views of St James beach and the mountain and was a lovely setting for an evening BBQ. The dining room is something else, you really feel like royalty as it’s adorned with Venetian mirrors and crystal chandeliers and a long banquette table. The location is ideal out of the hub of Kalk Bay but within walking distance to the boho shops and we enjoyed the Italian restaurant just a few minutes from the villa. Like all houses along this stretch of coast a road which is out of sight and the railway line run along the beach front. We didn’t find this an issue more like a trip back in time sitting on the veranda with a GnT listing to the crashing waves watching the occasional train trundle past. Jackie (I hope I’ve got the name right) who cleans the house was outstanding and her magic pantry that transformed dirty into clean dishes almost my favourite room in the house. However my personal favourite room in the house was the snooker room with its dark red fabric lined walls it made a spiritual end to many a night shooting some pool in our own boys room! If you like modern minimalist trendy hotels this is not the place. Villa St James is a grand old mansion that has parlours, out houses, 4 posters, maid quarters a lawn fit for bowls or badminton!! If I had stayed longer I’d have bought flannel trousers a smoking jacket and settled in for good!! We enjoyed staying at this villa, loved everything from the views, the rooms, the location and the history that it has.

Best Group Accommodation on the Peninsula
I organised a weekend getaway for myself and 12 friends, all boys. We needed a place that was close to Cape Town (so that the fathers with a weekend pass could get home quickly if need be) but also far enough away so that we felt we were out of the city. Villa St James fitted the bill perfectly. The house itself is AMAZING, the grandeur of the building is breathtaking, the rooms completely luxurious, and there's a seperate bar and billiards room which suited the boys very well. The massive lawn, patio and swimming pool, with a view of the ocean, added to the wonderful getaway experience. We were also keen for a bit of nightlife, and the local bars and restaurants (Brass Bell, Harbour House, Polana, etc) were perfectly suited to this, and best of all, within walking distance. It's enough admin getting that many people together, so it was a complete relief that organising the accomodation was no admin at all. The accomodation team, from the initial booking to the final clean up, are the epitomy of professionalism and I didn't have to worry once. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to recommend this gem to anyone.

Sublime
Two day girls' getaway spent in this magnificent villa. The views are unbeatable, the villa has everything you could possibly need with space for many people to stay together without getting in each other's way. Two minute walk from beach and ten minute walk to Kalk Bay. WIsh I had known about this place for my 40th birthday - the diningroom with it's 22 seater table makes you feel like you're at a grand ball! Love it, love it!

We felt like kings and queens the whole weekend !! We didn’t feel like we were in South Africa, it felt like we were somewhere overseas !! We had a nice braai on Friday night and we felt like royalty having our dinner in the stunning dining area !! Once again, thank you thank you for a GREAT weekend – we will be back soon .......
