To the north the back of Table Mountain can be seen- and to the east the Franschhoek mountains and across False Bay to Hangklip. The house has an indigenous flair with dense wood beams, bamboo ceilings, red stone walls and open-plan wooden staircases The house is built on three levels. Driving into the double garage, guests are welcomed by John, our dedicated house manager. The first floor boasts an open plan, fully fitted designer kitchen with imported hob, dishwasher and washer-drier. Large glass doors run through the house and can be opened to allow the dining room and lounge to flow seamlessly into the private garden with koi pond and plunge pool. There are three bedrooms on the second floor- all are en-suite and are furnished to a high standard. In the early spring whales are seen cavorting in the Bay below.

Simon's Town is 40km south of Cape Town City Centre. It is situated on the eastern slopes of the Cape Peninsula overlooking False Bay and the Indian Ocean. To the South lies the beautiful Cape Point nature reserve. The town was named after Simon van der Stel and was a naval base for the Royal Navy from 1814. Most of the Cape Peninsula's many sights can be accessed by 30 minutes car drive including the Historic Constantia vineyards, the Stellenbosch wine lands, the beaches of Hout Bay and Clifton and the city centre with Robben Island ferries. Simon's Town itself retains its colonial charm. A smaller version of the famous Victoria and Albert Waterfront looks out across False Bay with restaurants and boat hire. And of course the African penguins ('Jack-ass') have their home at Boulder's beach 10 minutes drive from the house. Surfing beaches at Fish Hoek and Muizenberg are 10 minutes way. And a secluded swimming beach is Simon's Town's best kept secret.
A luxurious hide-away that begs an explanation
How could they let people share this space and make it their home when actually, if it was mine, I would have liked to keep it to myself? That was the question I wanted to ask the owners of this fabulous house when I recently stayed in it for a week during a visit to the Fairest Cape. OK, the weather could have been better, but then the house with its breathtaking views across the ocean made staying in quite an attractive option if I have to be honest. Its very spacious entertainment areas meant that there was plenty of opportunity to cook and catch up with friends. The charming Simonstown centre was an easy distance away and provided in our every need. But the best part of staying in was the treat of having countless Southern Right wales frolicking in the bay below, bridging from the water and entertaining motorists and the many coaches filled with tourists on their way to Cape Point who had no choice but to make imprompto stops to watch the spectacle. Fort Vic gave unhindered views of it all - and all from the comfort of a chair and yes, even from the bed in the main bedroom!! Also very refreshing was that all the furnishings were of outstanding quality and very comfortable indeed - unlike some other holiday rentals where it is very clearly the owners' second home. This is one of the finest self-catering houses we have ever been to and I can only imagine what it must be like to stay in it when the weather is good, because the garden and pool is just so inviting. Talking of which, I was very impressed by the owners' efforts to create a garden filled with indigenous plants or as the locals call it "fijnbosch". As you have probably guessed by now this is a very special place and if ever I come face to face with the owners I have a few questions which I hope they can answer. And that is simply: 'what the hell are you doing in the UK if you have this stunning property which begs you to just live in it!'? Suppose the answer would be simple: someone has to pay for all the luxuries for us visitors to enjoy!
