| Local leisure activities |
The island covers 7 square miles, and approximately 4,500 people live on it. Quiet, relaxed, undeveloped, yet enough to do for weeks on end and small enough to walk everywhere…if you are fit. Lower Bay is possibly the most picturesque beach on the west coast. It is a favourite spot for former prime ministers through to famous actors! There are usually very few people on the beach. The Bay is excellent for water sports. Guests can learn to sail with an excellent local instructor or day sail on an old classic schooner ‘The Friendship Rose.’ Princess Margaret Beach is a 15 minute walk along over the bluff, quite steep but easily doable. Here the more adventurous can hire kayaks or windsurfers and there are some wonderful beach bars. With a reputation as a winter getaway for the artists, songwriters and the rich and famous seeking privacy, Bequia is a truly tropical island with wonderful white-sand beaches and, arguably, the most agreeable climate in the West Indies with an average annual temperature of 85 F. The Old British charm is still evident. Pastel coloured plantation houses stand amid palm plantations, whilst local cricketers play beneath the palm trees on the beaches. Holidays in Bequia are the epitome of barefoot luxury in an out-of-the-way secluded tropical island. Quiet, relaxed, undeveloped, yet enough to do for weeks on end and small enough to walk everywhere. Bequia is the second largest of the Grenadines, and its Admiralty Bay is a favorite anchorage for yacht owners. The island covers 7 square miles, and approximately 4,500 people live here - an intriguing mix of native Bequians from African, Scottish, Irish, French, Indian and Carib descent and more recent settlers from Europe, America and Canada who have chosen to make Bequia their home. The island is influenced by a strong historic attachment to the sea and today's fishermen, sailors and boat-builders are quietly proud to share their marine traditions with newcomers to the island. DINING and NIGHT LIFE Dining is a delight, with fish one of the staple foods; seasoned Creole-style is a must, as well as Snapper, Grouper and Kingfish. The west coast is renowned for its restaurants and menus, which include local as well as international cuisine. Luxury hotels Fire Fly and Bequia Beach Hotel have fabulous cocktail bars and delicious menus. There are music or food events each evening at different location. A copy of the islands events will be at the house for you. Dining: Several modern and delicious restaurants line the shores of Bequia. For gourmet dining there is The Fire Fly Mustique restaurant in Bequia, Jacks Beach Bar, Moskito Beach restaurant and The Devils Table waterfront restaurant Music: Live music is played almost every night in the winter and Spring months. Sports: Sailing, Kayaking, Snorkeling, Tennis, Hiking, Deep Sea fishing, Cricket and Basket ball matches. Tours: Funky locally painted wooden speedboats tours or large speedboat or fishing boat hire, barbecue trips to off shore islands, day trips to Mustique, day trips to the Tobago Cays marine reserve swimming with turtles, Turtle Sanctuary, Colonial forts….30 minutes speedboat ride/1 hour ferry ride to St. Vincent for Waterfalls, Whale and Dolphin tours, Volcano hiking, Surfing, Cycling tours, Nature trails, flower plantations, indigenous parrots at the Botanical Gardens. Local shopping: Rasta fruit and veg market, colourful boutiques, music stores, pottery, silk screen factory, scrimshaw knives, coffee shop and delicatessen, ice cream parlours, Doris’s wine cellar and grocery store, local rum shops, coconut and shell and jewellery craft stalls, to mobile phones and ink cartridges should you need them… Internet: Wireless internet access at villas, restaurants and internet cafes across the island. Currency: US dollars or Eastern Caribbean dollars. Location: Bequia is neighbour to Mustique and Canouan island in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. Access: Bequia has direct daily flights from Barbados. From New York and London it is one days travel leave in the morning arrive for sunset in Bequia. Climate: The islands enjoy a pleasant tropical climate all year round, with a yearly average temperature of 26° C (79° F ). The warmest month is September, with an average temperature of 27° C (81° F ); the coolest is January, with an average temperature of 25° C (77° F ). The average yearly rainfall on St. Vincent is 231 cm (91 in), but in the mountainous areas the average rainfall is more than 380 cm (150 in) a year. May or June through December is the rainy season. If you find yourself on Princess Margaret Beach for the day don’t miss the tasty bar lunch at Jack's. Healthy options include Feta Salad and Chicken in a Basket. In the afternoon you might want to go for a massage at Jack’s spa before joining the cocktail drinkers congregating to watch the sun setting into the sea. From their private jetty you can catch a water taxi into the harbour for dinner. Port Elizabeth has the largest deep-water natural harbour anywhere in the Eastern Caribbean making it a favourite destination for Yachtsmen. Bequia has geared up to receive its visitors with every possible restaurant option imaginable. At night the waters of the harbour reflects the fairy lights of French, Italian, and Mexican restaurants along side those of the delicious West Indian fusion kitchen of the harbours favourite - Devils Table. Each night of the week one of these restaurants will be showcasing the music of a local band. These vary from the cover tunes you might expect to find in other tourist spots to the locally composed Country Western tunes of the Country Relatives. Certainly the island has plenty of local life to entertain but total seclusion is only a short bounce away to the Island’s North coast. Bequia is seven miles long and a car journey tip to toe will take no longer than twenty minutes. From the harbour ten minutes drive in rented jeep or taxi will take you to the cool breezes of the quiet north coast where Spring Bay, Ravine Bay or Hope Bay provide almost guaranteed privacy. There is something for everyone here. Bequia can be your private desert island retreat or your party island with tasty food and immaculate beaches, what more could you want?
