Mangwana is a dramatic example of a new generation of contemporary Caribbean architecture, set in a truly spectacular location. The brief to the architect was to produce something with a high ‘wow’ factor that is very comfortable to live in with lots of natural ventilation. Designed by British-based architect Jake Edgley, who trained with Sir Norman Foster, the house offers her guests a unique holiday of barefoot sophistication.
The design is inspired by traditional Moroccan courtyard houses, where a series of intimate spaces surround water, providing shelter from the sun throughout the day and with cooling breezes from the pool.
Each bedroom tower has a living space below and a private access stair. To the north of the courtyard a large hall provides eating and dining areas, and creates a sequence of spaces from the spectacular mezzanine entrance , through the public hall to the private towers beyond and then finally a huge balcony suspended high over the treetops.
Looking south from a height of 600 ft down over the jewel-like southern Grenadines, the infinity pool has jaw-dropping views.
Perched on a steep hillside in dense forest on the island of Bequia in the Caribbean Mangwana offers possibly the most breathtaking location on Bequia.
From the wooden sun deck at tree top level, there are captivating 300 degree views
encompassing Battowia and Balliceaux to the east, Mustique (only six miles away) to the southeast, the islands of the south Grenadines and Bequia’s own leeward side with its beautiful beaches.
Watch the sunrise over the islands directly from your bed or the green flash at sunset from the west facing balconies.
You enter Mangwana at mezzanine level directly into a vast living area with vaulted ceiling, open- plan kitchen and magnificent 16 ft high Brazilian hardwood doors which in turn open onto the pool and frame one of the villa’s many stunning views. There is a peaceful walled garden on the shaded south-west side with a large terrace to the east for outside eating, BBQ’s and dancing.
Mangwana is a family house with endless opportunities for fun and relaxation. It has its own games room and TV room. Amenities include table tennis, table football, a rowing machine and massage table, plus an area for petanque (boules) in the grounds below.
Mangwana's six cool and breezy bedrooms are large and versatile. Two have king-sized beds whilst the remaining four have twin beds which can be put together to make king sized doubles. Five of the six bathrooms are en suite; two of them open to the night skies. All bedrooms have their own private balconys, over looking the pool on one side and the second looking outwards over the ever-changing seascape.
Mangwana also has a private guest wing with its own kitchen and laundry room and two large balconies with breathtaking views.
One car is provided with the house. More can be hired if necessary by a larger house party

Lower Bay is possibly the most picturesque beach on the west coast. It is a favourite spot for former prime ministers through to famous actors! There are usually very few people on the beach. The Bay is excellent for water sports. Guests can learn to sail with an excellent local instructor or day sail on an old classic schooner ‘The Friendship Rose.’ Princess Margaret Beach is a 15 minute walk along over the bluff, quite steep but easily doable. Here the more adventurous can hire kayaks or windsurfers and there are some wonderful beach bars. With a reputation as a winter getaway for the artists, songwriters and the rich and famous seeking privacy, Bequia is a truly tropical island with wonderful white-sand beaches and, arguably, the most agreeable climate in the West Indies with an average annual temperature of 85 F. The Old British charm is still evident. Pastel coloured plantation houses stand amid palm plantations, whilst local cricketers play beneath the palm trees on the beaches. Holidays in Bequia are the epitome of barefoot luxury in an out-of-the-way secluded tropical island. Quiet, relaxed, undeveloped, yet enough to do for weeks on end and small enough to walk everywhere. Bequia is the second largest of the Grenadines, and its Admiralty Bay is a favorite anchorage for yacht owners. The island covers 7 square miles, and approximately 4,500 people live here - an intriguing mix of native Bequians from African, Scottish, Irish, French, Indian and Carib descent and more recent settlers from Europe, America and Canada who have chosen to make Bequia their home. The island is influenced by a strong historic attachment to the sea and today's fishermen, sailors and boat-builders are quietly proud to share their marine traditions with newcomers to the island. DINING and NIGHT LIFE Dining is a delight, with fish one of the staple foods; seasoned Creole-style is a must, as well as Snapper, Grouper and Kingfish. The west coast is renowned for its restaurants and menus, which include local as well as international cuisine. Luxury hotels Fire Fly and Bequia Beach Hotel have fabulous cocktail bars and delicious menus. There are music or food events each evening at different location. A copy of the islands events will be at the house for you.
