The Cuckoos Nest is a delightful self-catering cottage, as charming as it sounds, and a perfect Ambleside hideaway for couples.
Awarded 5 stars by VisitEngland in recognition of its excellent overall quality, the cottage is prettily furnished and offers everything you'll need for a relaxing, comfortable and enjoyable break in the Lake District. Situated in the very centre of Ambleside, the cottage is tucked behind Smallwood House Hotel and accessed from the hotel's private car park, with a dedicated parking space for the cottage. However, the cottage is very private and has a lovely romantic atmosphere inside.
While cosy and compact, the cottage covers two floors and comprises a well equipped kitchen/dining area (including dishwasher, fridge freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster), a comfortable lounge with TV, DVD and video player, bathroom with shower and spa bath and one double bedroom. There is gas central heating throughout and an electric fire in the lounge, ideal for autumn and winter or even those cooler summer days. For that extra bit of luxury, both the kitchen and bathroom have lovely, cosy under-floor heating independent of the central heating.
Ambleside is a bustling and vibrant small market town offering a good selection of specialist shops and great quality restaurants, bars and cafes, so need for cooking if you don't want to. Ambleside is a favorite with walkers and visitors alike; it offers a wealth of activities or provides an excellent starting point for easy access to all corners of the Lake District.
Guests at Cuckoo's Nest have use of the luxury spa and swimming pool at a hotel just a few minutes walk away. Secure cycle storage is available if you would like to bring your own bicycle. There is complimentary wifi and all prices include gas, electricity, towels and bed linen.

Ambleside is a perfect place to enjoy all the outdoor activities the Lake District is so well known for. You can leave the car in the car park and enjoy high and low level walks right from our door, covering short and long distances, as well as cycle rides. The Lake District is also a climbers paradise but if you're a beginner you might prefer to try one of the local climbing walls instead. On lake Windermere you can experience canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, rowing, diving, water skiing and of course open water swimming. The Great North Swim is held here annually. If you prefer more leisurely ways to pass the time, then there are many visitor attractions nearby, including the World of Beatrix Potter in Bowness or take a cruise with Windermere Lake Cruises who sail from Ambleside. The town has a great cinema and lots of specialist shops as well as great restaurants, cafes and bars.

By car from the south
Leave the M6 at J36, then follow the A591 to Ambleside. Follow the one way system through the town on to Compston Road. Smallwood House Hotel, our sister property, is on the right hand side. Take the next right after the guest house and immediately right again into the car park.
By car from the north
Leave the M6 at J40 then follow the directions for Keswick. Turn left on to the B5322 signposted Threlkeld to join the A591 for Windermere. Follow this road past Grasmere and Rydal and arrive in Ambleside. Follow the one way system in the right hand lane, joining Compston Road. Smallwood House Hotel, our sister property, is on the right hand side. Take the next right past the hotel, and then right again into the car park.
By train
Oxenholme - the Lake District is on the West Coast mainline with Virgin Rail. Connecting trains can then be taken to Windermere on the Lakes Line. A connecting bus or taxi can be taken to Ambleside which is about 4 miles away.
